I've run into a few people who wonder what we have to hide. Not necessarily on thoughts.com, but on blog sites like this. Why do we lie about our names, they ask. And why can't you share all these feelings and thoughts and problems in the real world, they wonder. Why turn to a community of strangers for understanding and sympathy? What's wrong with you?
I'm willing to bet that at least 75% of us, if not more, have false profile imformation. We all have fake names and (probably) false ages. We all write deeply and openly about our lives, but I don't think very many of us would be able to do that if we were on this site as ourselves. My name isn't really Dannie Murray, but everything I've ever posted comes from my heart. So really, we're all free to be exactly who we are, even if nothing about the little things--age, marital status, name, location, even sex--are actually true. Hardly any of us even have pictures showing what we really look like! Is it because none of those things are really that important? That, in fact, they get in the way of who we really are? I may be twenty, but sometimes I'm closer to forty. Other days I'm about thirteen. If you saw my picture, would you be more interested in what I have to say? Or less? Those things we are on the outside, those things we show the world, our jobs, our clothes, our locations, our names even, have very little to do with all the crazy thoughts and images on the inside. We've all signed up here to let out what we really are, but in the real world we hide ourselves.
We're all a pack of loveable liars...but I think, in perfect honesty, this is exactly who we are.
