Chapter 1

Another flash of light smashed into my face like brick wall. In a detached way I could hear the sound of sirens. Distressed voices seemed only to drift in and out.
“EKG’s dropping…”
“Major hemorrhaging…”
The sound of my mother’s voice was the most deafening and sturdy, though my ears now felt as if they were plugged up. I looked up at her. She looked down at me; her eyes were accusing, terrified, confused and pleading.
“Stay with me.” she had said - her musical voice trembling uncontrollably. “Just stay with me.”
Stay with me. Dark liquid pooled around my wrists. I felt more exhausted than I had ever been in my life. Just stay with me. I closed my eyes. Darkness invaded my mind just as peacefulness decided to pay its final visit.
“Please, stay with me.” My mother pleads. Her final words etch themselves into my brain. The peacefulness is almost overwhelming. It’s almost as good as a drug.

*

It’s a very dark place, this place between life and death. The peacefulness fades a bit; replacing the missing pieces with the cold, sick feeling of depression.
It feels like I’m floating; like I’m trapped in a buoyant liquid - free of everything but my screwed up conscious. That and my pain - like a sword going through my ribs and piercing my heart. It sits there like a shard of ice getting colder and colder.

It doesn’t cease…
It never stops…
I’ll never be free…

My last thought fades as I drift. An unseen force pushes me back toward the place whence I had come. I saw an orb of blazing light, then. It was brightest in the core - the fire seemed to fray and fade as it shone out while it seemed to come nearer and nearer - moving in tune with my body. Or was I moving? I didn’t know. Nor did I care.
Time had eluded me. I didn’t know if a second passed or an hour. All I knew was that the orb of light suddenly burst up in an inferno into an ever-glowing radiance. As the lights touched me it gave me a sense of pleasure. This feeling - so long dormant from my body - was truly the best feeling I could imagine.
And then all faded into an intense white.
