The level of ignorance that some people can go to is just outrageous sometimes. This morning my grandmother called me and asked if I could go buy some cough medicine for my cousin, I had just gotten to sleep at 5am and it was 930 so I was insainly sleepy but I went anyway. So im at Wal-Mart standing in line and this guy starts bitching about who knows what and he says that he wants a manager, so a manager goes up to him and askes him what the problem was. He says "No I want a white manager because you wouldnt understand!" SON OF A BITCH! (the manager was of middle eastern decent by the way) How rude was that?! That was just so uncalled for.
Anyway after that I go to my grandmothers house to give my cousin the medicine, she looked like crap so I offered to make her some soup. While shes eating her soup we start watching The Prince Of Egypt and my grandmother walks in and starts looking at it with us. Here is a little history on my grandmother. As a child I hated my grandmother, I know hate is a strong word but thats exactly how I felt about her. I hated her. And as an adult im still not to fond of her but I dont hate her. She is extreamly religious, god speaks to her, jesus comes to her in her dreams, shes a spiritual warrior and so on and so on. On the other hand she is a huge racist extreamly homophobic and over all a very narrow minded hypocritical person.
So were looking at the movie and she says "Don't you wish you lived in biblical times? Just imagine all the amazing things they got to see." She goes on to say how she saw a dateline special where these atheist and these christians were having a debate and how the atheist were just trying to brainwash the people watching the show not to believe in god. Now if any other person would have said this to me I would have gone ape shit on them and given them a very serious history lesson. But she IS my grandmother and going ape shit on her would have sparked a family fued unlike no other. So I just sat there biting my tongue.
After that they start showing some old Rock Hudson movie and she says "Isnt it sad that he was gay he was so handsome" Sad? My cousin says "it's so weird how you can't tell when some people are gay" My grandmother "You can allways tell, maybe not at first but after a while you can" I said "How?" She said "Because there is a sadness inside of them, they know what they are doing is wrong." BULLSHIT. I wanted to choke the life out of both of them.
I am so glad that im not like them or that guy at walmart. I am color blind and I accept people for who they are. I think all people should be like this.

I'm from Philly, we have a great mix of races. I still amazes me when I hear people mirror off all of this racist crap that they heard from their parents ..instead of having a mind for themselves or compassion for other people. UgH!

I hate to be awful but old people drive me nuts! Of course there are exceptions and my grandma is the coolest in the world but old people are so obsessed with the way "things USED to be" blah blah blah!

It was a different world for the, not as an excuse, it sure isn't right. But it does make it harder for people...just an FYI, I'm a 23-year old social worker, I get what you're saying, I'm just saying don't be surprised, I think the best thing one can do is expose them to people who are (insert race, religion, culture, sexual orientation) and help them realize they're people. Just people.
