Hi Folks, just thought I'd give you an insight as to where I live with this small history lesson on The Old Hall at Gainsborough, lincs... What have you got on your doorstep????
Gainsborough Old Hall is a unique medieval manor house which is an evocative reminder of life more than five centuries ago.
Built right in the centre of the town by Sir Thomas Burgh between 1460 and 1480, it remains much as he left it.
Visitors follow in the footsteps of royal patrons as both Richard III and Henry VIII were guests of the Burgh family. And the Mayflower Pilgrims and John Wesley worshipped within its walls, which is why the landmark is a hot spot for American tourists.
The Great Hall with its splendid arched wooden roof remains at the centre of the building. And the kitchens have remained virtually unchanged since they were built.
Those who climb to the top of the brick-built tower can enjoy the magnificent vista of both the manor lands and the river Trent into Nottingham.
The Friends of Gainsborough Old Hall Association was launched in 1949 to save the building from decay and the site was opened to the public. The Old Hall is now owned by English Heritage and managed by Lincolnshire County Council.
It is open all year round, Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 5pm and on Sunday afternoons from 1pm to 4pm from Easter to the end of October.
