Another in the Dave/whiteknight series of posts LOL
Yesterday I had a talk with a good friend of mine on here about his reluctance to be called a hero. And he later posted on the subject.
After reading that post and thinking over my talk with him I think that it is more about us than him.
I am not sure if it is one of the famous proofs of God's existence but I know I read somewhere by some theologian that if God did not exist we would have created him.
Maybe that is why we make people heroes in a sense.
They make us see that we can, as mere men and woman, do things beyond ourselves.
Yes anyone would hope that given a car speeding towards us and our loves ones that we would push them out of the way first and then worry about our safety.
We all hope we might have helped the little old ladies down the steps of the burning Twin Towers rather than run like a deer to get out and save ourselves first.
We all hope that is us.
But in many ways we fear it might not be and heroes show us it could be. They make us see the best in man, the best we have to offer, the good side of us.
My brother worked in one of the towers but was not in work that day so he was never in danger. But I know had he been he might be gone. Most of the people he worked with made it out as they were on low floors and were in the second tower that fell so they had time. But I know my brother, and all he is would have kicked in and he would have grabbed the infirmed and the helpless and the people needing help and he might have even made it out and ran back in to help. I know him and how he is built.
The world needs heroes not just to do heroic things but to make us see we can do the same maybe if we are faced with the same crisis. I look at what my buddy did and I hope even with all that is going on that my better angels would take over and I would push my wife and son out of the way and then, and only then, take the moves to get me out of the way.
It also frankly says something that this bothers him, that being called this is such a bother. A hero always seems to be unwilling to take the praise while someone who likes the praise and newspaper articles and awards and whatever comes with this type of bravery is usually found to not be a hero in the end.
The other day I saw a trailer for the new Batman movie.
In it Harvey Dent says the line" You either die a hero or live long enough to be the villan" and in that light I say take the praise, allow it to happen so that we can all have the hero we need as the world has far too far too many villians these days.
