We will never grow up......

I got a call yesterday that one of the people I work with, that I supervise, is being called to the main office to speak with an Equal Employment Office Rep.   As this employee is a black man and I am white, and he underperforms and has been given ratings that reflect that I was concerned that this was about that.  Not to say I do not have all my "i"'s dotted on the review and can back it up with numbers, but it still worried me.
So I went to my boss and asked if he knew anything about this
Turns out that a member of the staff, not anyone under me, has a complaint against another supervisor and is dragging every minority employee into this to prove his point that this supervisor is a racist !
Now I have worked under this supervisor in the past, and he is a jerk.  He is overbearing, unweilding, stubbon, etc.  He made my blood boil more than once.  He and I never got along.  But I am as white as the day is long and I feel this way.  So do most people that have worked under this man.  But it has NOTHING to do with race !
I really wonder if anything we do as a country will ever solve this issue.
Yes, people were treated like things for 200 years in this country
Yes, even after that offically stopped it took 100 years for things to really improve
And yes, there is still prejudice
But if every time a person is treated badly, or unfairly, or just not the way they want to be, and the person that is treating them that way happens to be a different race or color or religion or whatever, the offended party gets to scream prejudice then we will never stop all this.  Maybe the person is just a jerk to everyone.  Maybe you are expecting things to happen that are not realistic.  Maybe the person is just having a bad day.
My ancestors were Irish and they were left out alot when they first got here.
I am Catholic and many many years ago they threw us to the lions as entertainment.
And I understand that the wrongs done to blacks in the US are more henious and more recent, but while I am not saying to get over it, I am saying that if you cry wolf at every turn it makes the true racist acts less noticeable.

Lets say 1/20/09 we have a black President
And a month later Congress fails to pass some bill he proposes
Does that mean Congress is racist, or they just did not like the bill?

I don't know what else to say except that this is one of the greatest blog entries I've ever dared to read. Awesome discussion of an important issue. You've handled this extremely well. More power to you.

Funny that you should bring this topic up...a couple of my friends and I were discussing this today. It's common sense that Congress did not like the bill. I hear the race card being played within my own race and its kind of funny because the person feels like the person should allow "free pass". For example, Vivica Fox was pulled over and the cop who happens to be an African American as well discovered that she was intoxicated. Failing the sobriety test miserably, she turns to the cop and say "aren't you going to help a sistah out." I am all for "power to the people" but when you are wrong .....you are just wrong.

For once I couldn't agree with you more. Political correctness has gone crazy everywhere it seems. Good luck with the problem

This is great, i totally agree with you on this whole post!
No one ever fights for you if you are white, but my god we have to watch everything we say and do so that we don't get accused of holding predudices that we don't have.
well said honey xx
