| The lost art of thinking |
|
My job requires me to supervise a number of people and answer questions that at times are complicated on complicated issues that mix the legal with the medical.
Sometimes I need to read things that could help me answer the questions that I am asked, reports and the like.
What I have noticed is that people have lost the concept that sometimes when asked something, or even when you ask yourself something, you need to sit back, be quiet and think. You do not need more information, you do not need to be told look at this or that, you need to think a minute and come up with a plan, an idea of what to do or even what more information you need or need to look at.
I make every effort to let the person tell me the entire set of facts before I start to think. Good thinking requires full knowledge and I have more than once given an answer to a question and only then been told some importanat fact that was left out because they did not see it was important; maybe tell me the person is dead at the beginning so I am not thinking of how we ask them a sensitive question.
I have often recently said that maybe I need a long weekend alone to sort of the questions I have about my life, and soon I will do that once I have more information.
But in the general sense we all need to remember that thinking breeds answers at times.
