I know that I keep assurring you all that I am not a Trekkie, and I am not. It is just that I guess you can use some ideas from that show(or shows) to make points. Anyone that watched the show knows who The Borg are. They are a race of single minded 1/2 robot, 1/2 living beings that are bent on the domination of the Universe. They do not care who lives, who dies, that only want to dominate and they have no other thought at all.
Now in the current race for President we have a man running who has many good ideas. I like alot of what he believes even if he has no real idea it seems to me how to get from idea to practice. This can best illustrated by a question he was asked on Meet the Press where when asked about how much money income tax brings in this country, he looked at Tim Russert and said " Alot" . No fact, no figure, no plan other than lets do this.
But the idea that worries me most that he has is this idea that seems to be more and more attractive lately. This idea of bringing home the troops. But He is not saying just from Iraq, no he wants theme ALL home!!! No more bases in Korea, Germany, the Pacific, nowhere but good ole USA. And if we do that, well we save a whole bunch of money and the world takes care of itself and people stop being mad at us.
Let me stop here to add that Mr Paul thinks that in a sense we caused 9/11 because we made them mad at us for having bases in the Arabic world.
OK, so once we get this entire force home, all the men and women, the planes, the ships...although I guess we sink the Navy since we no longer need it except to defend Hawaii !!....we then are stronger as all the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard and National Guard are here defending us. Or so goes the Ron Paul plan.
Sorry, one problem!!!
We do not live in 1908, we live in 2008. Planes and missles can fly here and kill us in minutes. So this defend the borders idea is 100 years too late. The world needs not a policman per say but a bodyguard. We need to be the better guys(because I know if I say the good guys I will get all kinds of proof we are not the good guys, so there liberals have your small victory...we are just the best on the planet right now comapred to everyon else)that protect the world from the bad guys.
Ok so what does the BORG have to do with all this? Simple. If in 2408, or so, when Capt Picard and his crew are flying thru the universe the Earth part of StarFleet decided to just pull it all back and defend Earth what would happen? The universe's weaker, less powerful people's would slowly be conquered by this evil single minded force. Finally they would be at Mars, and the whole universe would be stacked aginst us and against those odds we lose. But we saved all that money on antimatter fuel, and how dare we think we are the policeman of the universe.
That logic should be nice as it is the last independent thought you have as they fit you for implants to convert you to a Borg, good luck!
if we pull back and become fortress America, all that happens is the bad guys get the oil, we have not yet discovered how to run your Ford on anti-matter crystals so that may be a problem. They also take over most of Europe, hope you all liked seeing the Catherdal at Notre Dame because they are knocking that down as soon as they take over as well as the rest of European history. And finally when they have it all but the 50 states, they will come for us. And no one is here to help us.
And if you think I am being a little extreme, in a sense we met the Borg once in the 20th century. They wore fashionable brown uniforms, spoke German and were led by a man with a Charlie Chaplin moustashe. And had people as well respected as Charles Lindbergh & Joe Kennedy been listened to they would still around. Now they speak Arabic and fly planes into buildings.
Just a thought
