China boggles my mind.
For years now they have tried to be one of the big boys. they want to try to be more open to the world, get all the goodies that come with being part of the world community. And finally they got a big goodie, the Olympics.
The US has had the Olympics numerous times. The USSR had them once I would not be all that shocked if modern Russia gets them soon again. But China never had had them. They were seeing this as a way to show the world that they were not the closed society that had land and people but still was not really overall ready to be the the 21st century world.
This was like when that girl that finally says yes after alot of rejection from other women. This is your chance to show that all that everyone thought of you was wrong.
Well maybe we need to cancel the date!
First they send us poison toothpaste. But listen mistakes happen. US industries have been known to have assembly line errors that massive.
Then we get lead paint on toys. Well maybe we need to look into the factories more and a few key ministers and "buisnessmen" get fired a few commit suicide and we decide we will keep an eye on their exports when they enter the US and other lands
Then poison dog and cat foods. Again, we will look into this blah blah blah
But all of that COULD be people on the lower levels trying to make a quick buck and the goverment is not to blame.
Then they decide to screw with Tibet
That is a goverment decision
And now they are in danger of getting an Olympics where no one shows up but the one man Freedonian team!
I need to ask why do it now.
To back to the date analogy. You got dad's car, the car has a full tank of gas, you have on your best clothes after taking a long shower, you even snuck some of dad's cologne and you are in the car driving to the date...and NOW you decide to walk through the mall in a viking helmet w/ your nerdy Dungeon and Dragon friends singing show tunes!!!????
It could not have waited at least till the next day?
Or is it maybe that China really does not get it?
Maybe they do not really get the modern world.
Recently I read an article that told a story where on President Nixon's famous trip to China, the first ever by an American President, Chairman Mao offered the US 6 million Chinese girls if we wanted them! I was unaware of a female shortage in the US in the 1970's but maybe China thought we had one. We turned it down, but the offer itself shows an ignorance of the modern world.
But from all signs that China od 40 years ago is not today's China we are told. The old guard passed the torch to modern free thinking, progressive leaders.
China just may not be ready to play with the world yet.
Maybe it needs a time out |

The idea of living in China scares me. In Nottingham there are alot of Chinese students. They come here because the education opportunities are better.
From the conversations I've had with Chinese students it is an incredibly oppressive regime, but people haven't noticed that because it is also a very rich nation. They have a policy of one child per household, and a few years ago there were pictures in the news of foetuses dumped in the gutter - literally. Dead babies just flung in the street like rubbish. You only have to look at whats going on with Tibet to see what their governments think of Human Rights. Freedom of speech, for a start, is non exisitant. The students I have talked to have told me even access to the internet is restricted, sites like myspace, wikepdia and new sites. Its probably the one country in the world I have no desire to visit (Iraq might be on that list also!).
