Ok bear with me, but I think I have it figured out how to explain this:
Listen to any early Beatles hit, "She Loves You", "I want to Hold Your Hand", etc
Now close your eyes and try to imagine them singing it in concert in 1968.
Does not fit, right?
But Mick Jaggar still sings "Satisfaction", right?
Bono still sings all their early hits, right?
The Who, Led Zepplin, Springsteen, Billy Joel...etc...they all do their early hits
Now I know...McCartney sings all the old stuff, but he is not The Beatles, he is just one member
But they were the same group, the same 4 guys from when they became famous: John, Paul, George, Ringo
Yet they were a completely different group in 1964 then they became in 1968.
Maybe that is it: I was the bubble-gum "She Loves You" husband when she married me but now I am singing "Day in the Life" to my wife and she still wants the old hits. Her "musical taste" never changed.
This sounded better when I first came up with it and seemed so much more profound.....LOL
