Was cleaning the house yesterday...strange how such a bad husband does all this housecleaning...
ANYWAY
While I did I decided to get rid of a few old shows off the TIVO, sort of as background and will keep my mind busy.
I noticed a trend...
Men on TV are portrayed as dopes!!!
Back when TV first started we had Ward Clever. He came home and was a king! June made sure that he was fed, made sure he was kissed and greeted at the door. He was the king of his domain!
And when the kids had an issue they went to dad, mom told them to go to dad, and dad had the solution that worked. We even had shows like "Father knows best" and "Make Room for Daddy"
Now I know that society was highly sexist then and nobody lived like that REALLY, but at least it gave the impression that men were not dopes. And in showing that it also did not make June or the other women look like morons.
Even I LOVE LUCY where she was the crazy redhead that got in trouble, you ever so often had Ricky be the one that does the crazy thing.
Now move to yesterday:
The shows I watched had men eating paper rather than be honest about what they wanted, living in hotels rather than grow up and gte a real place to live, blow off work and re-live Spring Break then just leave his family to chase a girl his daughter's age, have the inability/not the first idea how to care for his own kids, drive miles to another movie theater rather than talk to a friend, and of course my favorite being that in one show I watched a guy catches a foul ball at a baseball game and when he and a friend argue over it the wife has to stand up for him and go get it like she was his mommy and not his wife.
Name me a strong male character on a sitcom
Where is the balance?
And I wonder if this is why we have kids that will not listen to parents as much. OK YES IT IS NOT JUST THE FAULT OF TV. but if you look maybe that is a part of it. Kids watch far too much TV these days. And what do they see?
Dad is dope like all other dads
Mom married this clod so how smart could she be?
So why listen to those two
