It has been clear for a long time now, but it really hit me last night, we are going to have someone run from a major party in this country that is unique. A non-white man has the nomination of a major party. I think we have come a long way.
But it hit me last night in a weird way.
I am sure this is a uniquely American thing, in fact a uniquely Baby Boomer thing...there were these things that were around in the 50's and 60's called the Marx Presidents. They were figures of every President on a stand. Every election the company would put out the two major nominees until 1968 when they stopped.
I always thought it would be a great buisness idea for someone, me, to make the Presidents from Ford on. I even called a few people as I was sure you needed the OK from the company. It no longer exists but someone had that trademark. I even went to a lawyer and asked and it was just too hard a process.
Guess not as someone on Ebay did it and is selling them.
Another great idea I missed out on.
So I recently bought the newest two, McCain and Obama.
I set them up with the others and it hit me.
Although we have men in wigs, men with beards, mustaches, stove top hats, glasses, short, tall, all sizes...none look like the man at the end of the row.
I think that while he may or may not be the right man for the job. While he may not be my pick for President, althought I am not too hot on McCain either.
While he may be many things...
He is progress
A country that 230 years ago would have said he was 3/5th of a person
A country that 138 years ago said that people like him were property in certain states
A country that 48 years ago would have not let him vote without alot of problems and would have kept him out of some schools
That country may make him our leader
Even if he is not, he is closer than frankly anyone thought someone that looked like him could get.
Many said we were not ready and maybe we are not, but we may be ready to get ready for the next guy to get the job. I think that it is likely should Obama lose in November that the first sucess in this or the gender area will come from the right, not the left.
I think we all deserve a little moment to say maybe when things look bad in many ways, maybe in one way we have grown up as a country, maybe this is when we all finally act as adults as a people and stop blaming and pointing fingers on both sides of the race divide.
