We live in a country that is constantly wondering about the rise in violence.
Right before Christmas we had another mass shooting where a lonley misguided person, this one seemed to even have a half decent support system that loved him and wanted to help...his landlady supposedly told him to come home and she would help him get through his problems in a motherly way, shot up the mall/school/work/etc and killed a number of innocent people.
We all ask why?
Why?
Then this morning I am on the way to work I hear a radio host talking about if his long time girlfriend got pregnant he would just say to abort it.
When people in the studio seemed taken aback he asked"Is that wrong to ask? Is it wrong that I ask even if she does not believe in that. I don't want it so it should go."
I know some of that was shock value but I have heard this show long enough to know when this guy is being honest, and he was.
I think the two are linked.
If you see everyday people marching into clinics to kill life, if you see people ending their lives because they can't live on, and you hear people talking about if older people are still "useful"....that slowly works on people. And slowly life is not as prized, and then killing everyone in the post office because you are mad is not that big a deal to you.
So maybe instead of going after Grand Theft Auto 10, or whatever versio they are on, we need to touch that third rail of thought and talk about the hard issues.
Yes maybe the kid playing the game makes him see the "how" to do it, it acts as a simulator...but the how of those killings is less importnat than the "why".
The why seems to come from a place deeper, because I watched every "violent" cartoon from Tom and Jerry to Bugs Bunny to Roadrunner and never killed anyone.
Make life less precious and less a treasure and it becomes easier for the kid playing Call to Glory or whatever to see those dots on a screen as people and blur that line

All life is precious, all life should be treasured and sadly I think you are right. People just do not value other people. They only see their own and if its not of any value to them then why would anyone else's matter? Its very sad :(

I personally think this decline in values can be linked to the increase in households with two working parents...you become so busy that you plop your kid down in front of the tv (and I totally understand doing that) just so you can get stuff done and you don't have all the time to talk to them about their day, their feelings, and explain the meaning of caring for your fellow human...also the decrease in the importance of relegion...but those are just my theories...
