In a nation built on debate...and yes I know this blog is read around the world but let me speak about the US and this might apply in other places too...in a country that started with a document that was hashed and debated and taken apart and put back together...why have we forgotten how to have a good healthy arguement about what is important??!! Recently I was at dinner with a number of people and one happened to be a Mormon. And the issue of the 2008 elections came up. Before I go on, I need to add that when it did, half the people in the room seemed to want to change the subject that second as if it was a big CIA secrect that in 11 months we need to decide who will lead the country. I basically expressed an opinion that I was not sure who I was voting for but a few were out: Hillary was one, Rudy was another as I think he may not have the experience you need or the personality you need to do that job..the man is a great guy but not sure he is the horse for that course, and Romney was the other based on his faith. I went on to say that I had read a bit on Mormons and that they scare me!! Their beliefs are so out there that they rival cults, and the founder of their religion(...and yes Mormons, you were founded by someone in the 1800's so do not give me the party line that he did not found the faith you believe in)Well myself and the man who was of that failth began to have a healthy debate. We listened, we talked, no raised voices, no personal attacks...we were probably alot more civil than Jefferson, Adams and Franklin in 1776 Philadephia. One thing struck me is that we semed to clear the table quck as if we were infected. The other thing that struck me is that everyone who was at this party since has said that you never discuss religion and politics...WHY???? I know someone is going to tell me it is because you will get into a fight eventually if you do. So let me get this straight...two things that lie deep in the belief system and we should shut up about them? Never talk about them? never debate them? never learn? Now do I think that some great movement was made by either side in this talk I had w/ the guy at the party...no. I did see that they are a little too good, to trained, to ready to defend their faith. Almost as if they are not just taught about teir faith on Sunday but also given the party line to spout. But do I hate this guy and does he hate me? Nope...in fact we are going to a baseball game once the season starts. So it amazes me that in a country so worried about offending, so worried about who will see what you think and support, so deeply indoctinated into this new PC culture where black is white is gray is purple and right is wrong is whatever makes you happy...that in this world you have a process where tonite people will walk into living rooms, stand up and say "I like X and I want X to be our next President". I was sure that by now we could have pushed those good people of Iowa into lil secrect booths so that no one gets offended. Thanks Iowa for keeping the American backbone alive, maybe the other 40 states can borrow some marrow???? (BTW...prediction...this blog will be swarmed by Mormons defending their religion)
