| Do we really want to all be one?

Had a intresting time the other night
A friend from high school, maybe my best friend from high school, was having a last minute surprise 45th birthday party. He was to be out of town but plans had changed so his partner threw this together.
"His partner"...did I mention this friend is a homosexual?(that was said tounge in cheek, I knew I hadn't)
Now it is weird for any straight guy when his best friend from high school, that in fact dated one or two girls you was attracted to in high school, decides to come out of the closet. I will say it was better than another set of friends I knew from back than who were women. They were very close, one came out, and immediately many people, not me, decided this must mean the other one was. The straighht friend was a very religious person and was devestated that anyone would think that of her. That was not the case with us. No one made me "gay by associaition". But it is still strange I will admit.
This is one of the first times I have seen him living his "new"
(he has been out for a few years but we just have not had time to see each other much) lifestyle, so again this was a little new for me.
But the thing that struck me was that in this very very diverse gathering of people, gay men and woman, straight singles, straight couples, people of all shapes and sizes and beliefs and backgrounds.....that with in an hour of the party starting an intresting dynamic was evident. In one area you had the straight singles, and close to them were the straight couples, in another room you had the gay man and in yet another area the gay women. This happened w/o any real plan, no one was avoiding anyone as far as I could tell. I had a great talk with some guy who does set designs on Broadway who was very "flamboyant", yet we had a great talk. So this was not a case of people avoiding people at all.
It just made me laugh that no matter how educated or open minded people are at a gathering, they all eventually are drawn to the people they are most like. Just an observation

I find that with my family gathering as well. In one corner I have my mums side of the family, on the other my dads side of the family. hen there is My husbamds side of the family in another room, and our friends some where else. Everyone has known each other through our time together for over 12 years but still the seperation, it is frustrating. So to combat this I always have any family gathering where there is only one room and it is small so people have to interact with each other.
I just wish I could find a room that was round to cut out the corners and then I would be right. (lol)
