This one is one of those posts that I think some might misread so please read it carefully before you jump down my throat.
There is a scene in THE SIMPSONS where the grandfather and one of his friends is walking down the street complaining about how these young people today all want everything for free. They then turn in to a Social Security office and say "I 'm old gimme, gimme, gimme!!!"
Last night I saw a great example of this attitude where some, not all, but too many people who reach old age think that they are entitled to things and attitudes and rights just because they got old. Now yes, you are a man my age and you are on a bus and an elderly man or woman gets on you offer your seat. That is polite and while it is based on age it is not what I am talking about. That is manners and civility.
OK....
Last nite I was working my second job when this elderly lady comes to my register. Before I can say a word she looks at me and says that I am going to earn my money tonight. She had maybe 6 items so it can't be that I will need to scan and bag a big order, I am thinking, so what is she talking about?? She then says that she is going to pay for her entire order in change and that she is a "old crabby bitch". I looked at her and just said that she said it not me, with a smile. Now frankly at this point I would not have even thought it, what had she really done?
"And I get to be this old crabby bitch because I am old and you work and pay my Social Security and you are just a worker and I can insult you and you can not do a thing about it!!! Right?"
I just nodded and went on, scanned her order and waited as she counted out 54 dimes.
As she did I added to her in a pleasant tone that first of all this was my second job so that while I can not be rude to her, if she did step over a line of civility I would say my peace and leave the job. And that while paying in dimes for an order this small was no big deal I could see she had much more change and there is a machine maybe 10 steps away in the store that will count the change for free and she can have bills rather than envelopes of change.
She went to tell me she did not trust the machine because it is part of a conspiracy(she said who ran the conspiracy but I will leave it at that..let's just say she is lucky I am Catholic) and that as the change came from the store she knows it is our legal responsibility to take it back.
So she took her stuff, left and was gone.
I came to find out she had been at the customer service desk for a half hour arguing that they take ALL he change back and count it.
I guess my point is that age does not give you the right to be rude and cranky.
