Weight Loss Information and Advice

Weight Loss

For many social, economic, and health reasons weight loss is an important issue in the United States. Generally speaking, weight loss occurs when the body uses up more energy than it is able to take in; stored energy is then used to keep the body running and functioning as it should. This means that weight can be lost due to illness, restricted calorie intake, and increased activity level.

Weight loss is also a major industry in the United States. An increasingly sedentary lifestyle has combined with poor eating habits and unrealistic physical expectations to result in widespread obesity and eating disorders. As a result, diet plans, exercise programs and other weight loss products are guaranteed money makers for entrepreneurs. But as a consumer you want to be smart about which product, plan, or program to follow. The easiest way to find the right plan for yourself is to consult your physician. Be honest when discussing your current lifestyle and goals; do not say that you eat better than you do or that you exercise more than you do. Not being honest with your physician could result in not having the best program recommended for you. You also need to be honest with yourself about how you have come to be living your current lifestyle and making your health choices.

Not All Weight Loss is Healthy

Illness is the easiest way to lose weight. Unfortunately, this method of weight loss is neither healthy nor permanent in most cases. As an alternative, weight loss pills, food plans, exercise programs, surgery procedures, and other 'cures'  have been developed to allow Americans to begin chiseling away at the fatty deposits, which cause health concerns, slow them down, and make them feel unattractive. Some of these options are more effective than others. Some are healthier than others. And all are useless unless certain lifestyle changes are made. The first step to successful weight loss is to set realistic goals. Repetitive exposure to media and fashion have idealized narrow waists, flat bellies and toned muscles; and have left Americans with unrealistic expectations for themselves. Before beginning any weight loss program, consumers should discuss their ideal weight and percentage of body fat with their physicians. Contrary to popular belief, some fat is healthy, particularly for those who desire to participate in strenuous activities such as sports or for women who wish to become pregnant.

Not All Weight Loss is Equal

When embarking on a weight loss program, it is important for a person to decide where he or she would like to focus their weight loss. Stomach, or abdominal, fat is considered the most unsightly and most likely to cause serious health problems in the long run. But some Americans would prefer to begin by reducing fat deposits in breasts, buttocks, thighs, and upper arms. However, many people will find that it is much more difficult to direct the focus of a weight loss program than to simply lose weight, owing to the desire to see overall results rather than results on just one portion of the body.

In addition, a weight loss program which does not take into account the physical needs of the individual can be detrimental to a dieter’s health. It is imperative that the consumer ensure that adequate nutrients are still consumed when reducing calorie intake. Similarly, exercise programs must take into account any existing health conditions or physical limitations each participant has.
