 The Other Boleyn Girl Movie
BLEGH!!! That's what I have to say about this movie. The book, by the same name, was AMAZING. It's my 2nd favorite book by historical fiction authoress, Philippa Gregory. The movie that came out on Friday was not good. I didnt expect the movie to be the same as the book because that's never the case. I expect some things to be skipped to fit the overall story into the movie length. But this was crazy. Below are the differences that I had problems with:

1. Anne is older than Mary - of course in history we don't know who was older, but in the book Mary is, so why change the way the book viewed it in the movie that is based on the book?
2. Little development of Mary and Henry's relationship - You saw Mary with Henry a few times and know that she had his son, but their relationship didn't really develop. The movie didn't get across the love that she felt for him in the book.
3. Leaving out Mary's first child - ok, I get it, to save time you can cut out the part about Mary's daughter since she doesn't have a role in the book really, but then why at the very end show the part with Elizabeth playing with Mary's TWO children?
4. Little development of Mary and William Stafford's relationship - I liked W.S. and their relationship seemed so loving and I wish they spent more time on that
5. George and Anne’s incest – I guess I can see why this would be skipped since it is a very sensitive topic and we historically don’t know if it took place, even though the book says so.
6. Elizabeth living with Mary and her children - As far as I know, correct me please if I am wrong, but this did not happen historically. Elizabeth did not move in with Mary and her family
7. Jane Parker – there was little development of Jane’s character and it was very unclear about why George did not like his wife. It was also somewhat random as to why Jane went to George’s uncle to tell on him since her character was not defined.
8. Lack of mention of George’s sexuality – Again, I understand that this is a touchy subject and all but it adds to reason why George didn’t like his wife.
9. Anne not taking Henry – In the book Anne took Mary’s son, Henry, as her somewhat “adoptive” son, her ward since she did not have a son. In the movie this doesn’t happen. Perhaps for time concerns.
10. The way Anne and Mary were introduced to the king – in the book they were brought to court to meet him, right?
11. Mary at Rochford instead of Heaver – When Anne sent Mary away in the movie she sent her to Rochford which would be George’s land. Mary went to Heaver in the book.

Those were I guess my main concerns. I loved the book but not the movie. I felt that overall the movie was very choppy in the sense that it did not spend much time on one character or character relationship. It seemed to be more about Anne than Mary as well. I hope that no more oh Philippa’s books become movies.
