what is "important"?
so, health class today we did an activity where we had to write down 5 categories that we fit into, but that we also feel are important in defining us. everybody else put the expected responses like girl, student, jewish, athlete, black/white, etc. surely these are characteristics, but my question is this: does it really matter? my response to this activity was greatly different from everyone elses response. i could only think of one answer, which was simply "human". why should ones gender or race define them as a person? what defines a person is what they do, and not where they were born. people put too much emphasis on superficial traits, and not enough emphasis on emotional traits. who cares if that one kid is a nerd? have you ever seen him be mean to somebody else, or show blatant self absorption? if not, then what gives you the right to dehumanize him with words or by violence? so what if you play sports, or wear cool clothes? this issue is too big to dissapear over night, but i try not to judge people, and i hope everyone who reads this tries to do the same.

I always say that race, gender etc are what you are, not who you are...who you are is like you said, your emotional characteristics, the things that make you unique and special.
Thanks for posting this xxx

this seems to me tobe a usa thing as in the uk we don't do this sort of labeling. but to put simply "human" is an expected responce to me i would have put "mabehuman"! but you only answer to be different don't you? if you though that you were a nerd put jock because a nerd is an athlete in maths and the sciences yes? if you thought you were a jock then put nerd as you would be so passionate about sport you were a nerd possibly knowing lots of game scores verging on autism. as for putting any religion as a definition of charactor that is just realy sad, how can a person alow themselves tobe in this catorgory?

yes i agree. his comment is very good, but my main point was that none of those characteristics even matter. the only important thing is the fact that you are human. to me, "nerd" and "jock" are just stupid tearms to spereate people into groups. its worthless.
