 What is Your Opinion?
As you have probably noticed I have a few opinions of my own and may all too frequently share them. Just out of curiousity I was wondering if you might have an opinion about this article I read a moment ago.

The article was about life sentences for children who had committed a crime (other than murder). So I am wondering how others feel about imprisoning a teenager for life. Do you believe a teenager should face life in prison with no parole?

Otherwise No.

Thanks for commenting. I would like to know in the case of rape (teens)
what the rate of recidity is before I could decide for sure. I would go
case by case. I appreciate your opinion.

Depending on the crime, psychologically speaking, many known serial killers began their crimes before they were legal adults. In cases such as these, the crimes would certainly continue if the person were not incarcerated. The unhealthy behaviors of Sociopaths and Psychopaths typically begin surfacing around age 15. In my opinion, the crime itself and the circumstances surrounding it should be more of a measuring stick for the prosecution and sentencing of the criminal.

Thank you for your comments. I agree when it comes to murder.
I also agree with your last statement.

-'In my opinion, the crime itself and the circumstances surrounding it should be more of a measuring stick for the prosecution and sentencing of the criminal'.

life in prison without parole? no. But.. I believe these cases need the most care before deciding sentencing. And lengthy well thought out programs and provisions added in.

All cases that are rounded up and assumed without any real glances and care kind of ruffle my feathers.

good question.

That's a difficult question to answer. I guess it would depend on what they did, the circumstances, the intent.

Exactly. I probably should have posted the article I read.

I think it would depend on the child, and wether or not they are cronicly geting into trouble, wether it was there first offense or not.I truly believe the punishment should fit the crime...

I always enjoy reading the comments people leave. Thank you so much. I must admit I struggle with this one being a mother and all. My first impression is that though most of us do not commit felonies in our teens, we have still made stupid mistakes along the way. Were we to be labeled thereafter or never allowed to move forward, there would be many more people in lock up. I agree punishment should fit the crime. I also believe in restitution and behavior modification via being given skills for life and work. I do not believe a teen is an adult. This is not to say some teens are not mature for their ages. I think many kids who are sent up learn to be better criminals and lose hope. It seems to me to give a teen a life sentence is beyond cruel, especially considering many adults are not given that sentence. But, each case is different. I would far rather have it be the exception than the rule to send someone away for life particularly a child.

Depending how young they are, the incarceration can affect their ability to function in the real world. Even if you let them out early, they have no idea how to interact and function in the mainstream.

Good point Lyn. Thank you for sharing.

the human brain isn't fully developed in the critical thinking areas until mid twenties or even later in some people. That doesn't mean society needs killers let loose, but younger offenders need special handling, with a rehabilitation goal.

I agree with you circe. I did not know that about the brain. I knew it was not fully developed, but I did not know at what point it took place. Thank you for sharing that with me. I appreciate your comments.
