 Our Eroding Liberty
A Facebook poll asks, "Should the Obama administration shut down Fox News?" The mere fact that such a question would even be asked is a sign of how much our free constitutional republic has declined. Even more sobering is the fact that, as of October 24 at 2:07 P.M., 3,636 of those voting in the poll had voted "yes"!

Of course, for the Obama administration to shut down Fox News, or any other media outlet would be blatently unconstitutional. Just like using taxpayer dollars to prop up failing companies, then telling those companies what they can and cannot pay their employees. It would be unconstitutional just like taking money from one state, and giving it to another for "economic stimulus". It would be unconstitutional just like forcing people to buy health insurance, then taking money from some people and using it to buy insurance for those who "can't afford it". I could go on and on. Since when does anyone in Washington care about the Constitution anymore?

Fortunately, Obama and his minions in Congress can't "shut down" Fox News, but for them to attack the only television news outlet that refuses to act as Obama's propaganda ministry is just as bad! These attacks come on the heels of Obama's suggestion that the Federal government "bail out" specific failing newspapers, in other words, advocating outright government control of news publications! It should come as no suprise that Whitehouse communications director, Anita Dunn, recently praised Mao Tse Tung. It is disturbing, but not suprising!

It used to be that "politics" was a casual interest to me, like a sport. It was my football. That was before I became a father. Now it is a passion for me. I do not want my daughter and my future grandchildren to be oppressed. I want them to have the liberty to use their talents to be whatever they want to be, to accomplish whatever they set their minds to. I'm sure most American parents share thet sentiment.

Our republic has been so free and so prosperous for so long, that many Americans take for granted that things will always be that way, requiring no action from us to "secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity". They have been unable to see that our liberty is eroding day by day. They have not been able to see this because, until recently, that erosion has been a very gradual process. Recently, however, our current tyrannical, leviathan, federal government has hit the fast forward button on that erosion, inspiring more Americans not only to sit up and take notice, but to stand up and take action. Many Americans whom have previously shown little interest in the workings of government are beginning to pay attention. Many of them are even becoming passionate about the future of our republic.

Many Americans, for whom such passion has recently been ignited, are too shy to be as vocal as others, but they will vote in upcoming elections. I only hope that they will see that it was Democrats AND Republicans that brought us to this point. We have been blinded by party loyalty in the past. My sense is that this is finally beginning to change, that we are wiping the party loyalty from our eyes and starting to see the cliff that the Republicans and Democrats are leading us towards! We must shake off the mindset of "choosing between the lesser of two evils", if we are to salvage our liberty!

"Tyranny, like Hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph!"--Thomas Paine

I agree that we need to shed blind loyalty to the failed two-party system, but to say FOX News is the only reliable news source is disturbing. I appreciate that you're getting a more intense interest in politics, but I strongly urge you to do more research or logical thought. "Many Americans whom have previously shown little interest in the workings of government are beginning to pay attention." Yes, and that resulted in the crushing defeat of the republicans last November. Record numbers of voters showed they were tired of the right-wing claiming to be the majority voice in America. Everyone simply let them run things until they got out of control. The Bush administration, with the help of an over-zealous GOP-controlled Congress, passed a lot of legislation to actually take our rights. (Remember the Patriot Act?) It may look like people large numbers of people are outraged, and a lot are, but more people come out for homecoming parades than they do for Tea Parties. For instance, if you watch news coverage of protests and Congress, it appears that the Public Option is wildly unpopular, but poll after poll after poll shows that a majority of the country is in favor of it. They just aren't taking to the streets and complaining loudly.

Every news organization has criticism of Obama. Every day, they nitpick something he's doing or isn't doing. They just don't go as far as FOX does and call him Stalin. He hasn't made a move to shut them down. They just aren't invited to come over anymore. If you were told you couldn't park in my driveway, would you think I was trying to take away your license and vehicle? It's a silly slippery slope argument. Oh, no! People on Facebook think FNC sucks! It must mean they'll be shut down! I once saw an online poll that showed an overwhelming majority of those polled thought Nicholas Cage shouldn't be allowed to do another movie. Does that also mean the Obama administration is gunning for Cage?

I'm all for scrapping the two-party system and getting real representation back in Washington, but FOX represents the news as well as the republicans represent Americans, and the reps are now only supported by 18% of the country.

O.K., I don't know how you missed this, but I am NOT a Republican. Also, if you think W was a "right wing president" I'd like to know what your definition of "right wing" is. We haven't had a conservative President since Reagan. Also,I did not say I watch FNC, in fact I very rarely watch television at all. In the past 5 years, I've probably watched 7 or 8 hours of FNC, and 4 or 5 of those hours were Katrina coverage (during which, by the way, Shep Smith and Geraldo Riverra RAILED against the Bush administration).

As for, "Oh, no! People on Facebook think FNC sucks! It must mean they'll be shut down! I once saw an online poll that showed an overwhelming majority of those polled thought Nicholas Cage shouldn't be allowed to do another movie. Does that also mean the Obama administration is gunning for Cage?", maybe you should look at my post again..."Fortunately, Obama and his minions in Congress can't 'shut down' Fox News."

And lastly, we don't have a two party "system", we just have had the same two parties running the show for 160 years because of the "lesser of two evils" and "a vote for a third party candidate is a wasted vote" mentality.

Thank you for your comment.

I did in fact miss it. That's what I get for blogging at work. lol!

Shepard Smith and Geraldo Rivera seem like the black sheep in the flock over there. Poor Geraldo gets yelled at a lot by Bill O'Reilly. Probably worth the paycheck, though.

And I wasn't saying you were necessarily a republican, but the current wave of passion has been a conservative one; however, the big wave happened already.

"Wasted vote" does seem to be the stigma applied to third parties. It's strange to think Ross Perot was the most successful third party candidate to come along in a while. There used to be a lot of parties. Do you think we'll ever return to a time with Whig, Bull-Moose, and such? We don't necessarily need a re-emergence of those parties, but do you forsee us being able to separate ourselves from the "lesser of two evils" quandary we've gotten ourselves into?
