I was in the military when it was created; I think that even then we knew it wouldn’t work. When President Clinton started the ball rolling I was so pleased, that was when I began my political writing, having countless articles published in the Air Force Times newspaper.
It was funny that even though people knew exactly what my views were they still came and said the wrong thing at the wrong time.
One day I remember I just finished a two-hour job and headed to our snack bar to get something to drink. There was about 8 guys in the snack bar when I arrived, most of which where watching CNN on TV. They were talking about lifting the ban. I walked to the guy running the place and was getting my drink when one the big mouths had to start up. He walked up to where I was standing but was talking to everyone in the room. “This is bullshit, I don’t want no fags looking at me.” He started with, I tried to ignore him. Then he said as he touched my arm, his mistake. “I mean I don’t want no fag looking at my butt, would you?”
Know what’s really bad everyone else that was in the room knew me well and they all got quiet and just watched, almost knowing what was about to come. I turned to him and simply said, “Dude you can’t even get a girl to look at you, what the hell make you think some guy is going to. You’re an ugly f—k.” Everyone in the room busted up laughing as I left shaking my head. The sad part was it was true; he was one of those guys that had to have some inbreeding in his family history. Plus I’ve been deployed with this dude, I’ve seen him nude in the showers, you’d have to be drunk and very desperate, he didn’t have a body to speak of and his personal equipment was really lacking.
It was funny that no one ever question me, even with the dozens of articles I have published supporting lifting the band. I think it was because most people didn’t seem to care. I think it was the guys that had sexual identity problems where the biggest complainers.
It’s also interesting to know that the gay military members tended to pull more that their share of the work. We were the ones that volunteered to work the holidays so the married guys could be with their families. We were the one that took multiple tours in the Middle East. We were the ones that stayed late so they could go pick up their kids from daycare. People don’t know how much of what we do is for the straight troops.

Knowing a thing or two about military life; I wonder if any of those guys knew you even wrote any of those articles, let alone ever read them.
Take care,

The Air Force promotes reading; I know the Army and Marines don’t prize that as much. LOL
Yes they did know because my name, rank and installation were attached to the article. After my second article I started receiving calls from people station on other bases supporting my view. That’s one of the thinks that encouraged me to keep writing. My Chief would ask each week if I was going to have an article in the paper just so he could look for it.
And if people didn’t read them the Air Force Times wouldn’t have kept printed them, and I am talking about 2-dozen articles or so.

If everyone would just mind their own business. Life would be much simpler.
It would be a tragedy if someone treated me differently for loving my husband.
It is no one's business who I love..just as long as I love is what counts!
