 Another one about cowboys
John Wayne was a man’s man. And the gals liked him too. From an impressive last jump in True Grit, to being the outlaw to steal the Quakers heart in Angel and the Badman, to continualing getting into lovers quarrels with Maureen O’Hare in The Quiet Man and McLintock, and finally getting shot down but taking just one more step in Cowboys; The Duke is not just a former movie star but the man who makes us all want to be a cowboy. The following is meant with no disrespect to him.

The Man from Snowy River and Return to Snowy River are two of the best westerns ever filmed. (yes, I do feel confident enough to make that statement) The screenplays are what we like to call a good ‘ol fashioned story. Is it any surprise the idea came from books? Now I am biased towards anything Australian because I indeed love that country and everything about it. In case anyone didn’t know, there is a location in Australia referred to as Snowy River. The scenery in the movie is beautiful and each new shot takes your breath away. And who doesn’t love listening to the Australian accent?

And the sound track, don’t even get me started. You know a soundtrack is truly wonderful if you like it just as well if not better when listening to it without the movie. Each song is packed with emotion and all done through instrument; no laziness on relying on words and singers to get the emotion across.

The plot of a movie obviously can make or break the film. These are classic plots that are entertaining and provide a good build up and back story to each character. No anticlimactic disappointments any ware in either film.

But as with everything there are a few “hiccups” if you will. I have no complaints with the first movie, none at all. But with the second movie what was the hair artist doing?! The movie was not supposed to be set in the 80’s or did you not notice their costumes as your were teasing Jessica’s hair and highlighting Jim’s? And no offence to the actor who played Harrison in the second movie, he did a good job. But he just wasn’t as truly hardened as was portrayed by the actor in the first movie. And of course I missed Spur and the aunt. But they did throw in a feisty barmaid to help share some of the feminist pro with Jessica so it’s all good I suppose.

Overall any movie that makes you cry at Denny’s death, cheer for Jim as he shows up the spoiled rich kids and fellow stablehands, laugh at Spur’s attempts to seduce the cook, and drift off at Jessica’s piano playing no matter how many times you watch it has my vote.

So Jim Craig, The Duke would be proud. As for me… I tip my hat to the both of you.
