The Kentucky Derby is fast approaching us and several horses have emerged as front runners. The first is a colt trained by Nicholas Zito, owned by Robert V LaPenta, and ridden by Cornelio Valasquez. He won the 2007 Breeders Cup Juvenile Championship and an eclipse award. He has shown awesome potential and pure speed as no horse has stepped forward to truly challenge him down the stretch. His sire is Cherokee Run while his dam is Vue. His dam is the daughter of Mr. Prospector and if you go way back you will see Count Fleet, War Admiral, Native Dancer, Bold Ruler, Hill Prince, Nasrullah, Mrs. Disco, and Gold Digger. All eyes were on War Pass as he started in the Tampa Bay Derby and went off as a 1-9 favorite. He got a bad start and never settled into the race as he finished last to the Barclay Tagg trained Big Truck. Tagg had been quoted as saying that they were riding to finish second to War Pass and if something happened to War Pass then they would win and that is exactly what happened. Now I don’t feel that this was something to hold against the immensely talented colt but it will certainly fuel the fire for my next pick.
Pyro is my next pick as he trained by Steve Asmussen, owned by Winchell Thoroughbred LLC, and ridden by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan. His sire is Pulpit while his dam is Wild Vision. Further back in the pedigree is AP Indy, Triple Crown Champion Seattle Slew, Icecapade, Secretariat, Bold Reasoning, Bold Ruler, Something Royal, Buckpasser, Nijinsky, and Nearco. Pyro is a solid finisher though he has lost to War Pass in all prior races against War Pass. In the Louisiana Derby Pyro came to run and run he did as he won by three lengths. During this race he beat out one of my other favorites in Majestic Warrior who never seemed to truly fire. As they made the final turn Pyro made a magnificent move of power and explosiveness as he split the leaders and won going away. I can’t say enough about this horse though I will with hold my top favorite until we see a few more derby prep races but at this point he certainly looks like the horse to beat. Stay tuned for further profiles on the other derby contenders.
Let me say one more time that my feelings and information are meant in no way, shape, form or fashion as betting tips. I don’t follow horse racing from the betting aspect but only from the pure spirit and enjoyment of the competitive equine spirit. So please don’t take anything I say and use it to place bets because I’m not trying to portray myself as a handicapper. I’m only giving you my simple opinions and the horses I like for various reasons not all of which is from a educated betting standpoint.
