The Difference Between Success And Failure
I got a ninety two percent on my math test last week. I don’t usually do very well in math. This is the second test this semester that I have gotten better than a ninety percent. What is even more interesting is the fact that I am able to help other students in my class. I took the Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) section. There is more study time and two different teachers in the SLA section. I really like that. We are able to do our homework together and we are able to teach each other the material that the others are confused about.

This kind of prowess over math has never happened to me before. I have always been good at grammar, politics, writing, and many other subjects, but I have never been good at math before. It is kind of weird. I am able to help several of the other students in my section. This girl, Morgan, has been having a hard time figuring the material out, and I have been able to help her. Not something that I am used to.

It took me three tries to pass MATH 0990, the class before the one that I am in right now. I had some really bad teachers. I had one that just read from the book. She didn’t even put examples up on the board. She used the examples that the book had worked out. I really didn’t want to go to that class because I was not learning anything. I tried to go to the Math Lab (A math study room where there are people who will try to help you work out problems), but most of the time the tutors in there were not very patent with me.

I think the difference between my passing and my failure in math classes so far has been the teacher. My success in my 0990 class can be attributed to the teacher, David, and the facilitator of the SLA workshop, Debbi. Dave was very good at explaining things in a way that I understood him, plus he seemed to only collect homework when I had it done. Debbi was great at doing examples on the board, and making us explain the process back to her. That helped so much. I remembered how to do the problems when it came to the final.

My teacher this semester, Clay, was recommended by Dave. They are good friends and have similar teaching styles. Clay is a great teacher. I wish I had figured out who was a good teacher the first time that I took the 0990 class.

Now I am in 1010 and I understand the material. I am glad that I can help the other ten students in the class. I have the highest grade right now. It’s only a B- but I have been neglectful to the amount of homework that I have been doing. I need to fix that. But my test scores will cover the spread for now.

I hope that nothing gets in my way of doing well in this class. When I took 0990 the first time I got sick a lot. I had to catch up on the work. The teacher was cool but he wouldn’t give me any leeway on the work.

But I don’t foresee any major problems. There is no reason that I shouldn’t get a good score this semester.

Congrats on doing so great in math! I'm taking two math classes this semester. Math for education teachers and Alegbra for teachers. It stinks. THe Math for education isn't so bad but it's just a lot of busy work. The Algebra for teachers it kicking my butt! I have a B in the class but after this last test I don't know. The material is simple really but I have test anxiety so that makes my life so much easier! I actually found someone in the class that is going to study with me and it's a guy that gets it all just like you do in your class!
