As I walked back to work after lunch this afternoon, I read a billboard along the Pike near Fenway Park. It says, "We have your President and your Congress. ~NRA"
For those of you who don't know, the NRA is the National Rifle Association. There were most famously headed by Charlton Heston until his recent demise and they're well known for their anti-gun control lobbying in DC. There are very few democrats in the NRA; it's mostly made up of southern republicans and western (meaning the Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana, etc.) types.
Anyway, I started thinking about gun control and why I believe in it and why others don't. Which led me to thinking about governmental interference, because the main argument given by the NRA for their stance against gun control is that they believe in small government.
I, too, believe in small government. I believe the government should protect its people (through peace, however, not military might unless in self-defense); I believe people should be allowed to do whatever they want as long as they're not hurting anyone other than themselves. So, for example, I think that if people want to watch porn, be kinky, kill themselves, do drugs, not wear a seatbelt, etc., they should be able to.
Instead, I think we should protect people. The sex trade, for example, could be regulated so that women could be treated for diseases before passing them on. Drugs could be regulated so they don't have dangerous impurities. Children should be required to wear seatbelts and nobody should be allowed to drive under the influence. This is because all of these things affect children or other people. That's what government's for.
I'm sure many of you have opinions on this and I'd love to hear them. Just please be civil because otherwise I'll just delete your post and not give it another thought. |

I think we should have balance. I have a fire arm-yes, one gun. I used to have many but decided that once my children were walking that my hobbie could have leathal consiquences.
As far as drugs go, well, the problem there is that drugs cause a lack of balance and judgement. I know, I have burried two of my friends who used drugs improperly.
Although I couldn't care less what people do at home it's the junkie that robs the 7-11 with a gun that may require some governmental regulation-not me.
