Health and Beauty Thoughts 2
3/02/10
February was heart month. With that in mind, lets take a look at
what is necessary in contemplating a healthy diet.
A healthy diet includes eating:
fruits
veggies
beans
whole grains
and.... oily fish like:
salmon
trout
herring
sardines
These fishes contain omega 3 fatty acids.
For those allergic to fish, omega 3 fatty acids
can be found in:
walnuts
flax seeds
canola oil
Saturated fats are not heart healthy. Meat and dairy products contain
SATURATED FATS.
Trans fats are just as bad. They are found in liquid
oils turned into solids, like in stick margarine.
Processed foods, cookies and snacks contain trans fats.
Salt is another problem. Too much salt is not heart healthy.
Our bodies need sodium, but not in excess.
Salt along with fats that raise our LDL choleserol levels,
raise our blood pressure and clog arteries
which leads to cardiovascular diseases.

Hay Fever
Hay fever is also known as allergic rhinitis. It will give you cold like symptoms such as:
runny nose
congestion
sneezing
sinus pressure
The common cold is caused by a virus. Hayfever is an allergic reaction.
It is a response to an allergen such as:
pollen
dust mites
pet dander
A cold appears 1 3 days after exposure to the virus, and can last 5 to 7 days.
Hayfever is an immediate reaction and remains with exposure.
See a doctor if you think you have hayfever. See a specialist if the reaction is severe or year round. Sometimes, immunotherapy (shot) is necessary to help the problem.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY THOUGHTS:Free Home Remedy Tip
Home remedies can often get better results than other forms of treatment. That is not to say that these home remedies have been scientifically proven to work. Consulting a physician is always a good idea. However, I have found that home remedies have worked for me , and in particular, a remedy to treat psoriasis has been very effective. I suppose my thought process in developing the remedy involved an holistic approach .
HOLISTIC THINKING
FOR BETTER LIVING. 1/02/2009
THAT'S THE TICKET.
.
My viewpoint, when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, revolves around an holistic approach. Some people think that concentrating on one piece of the puzzle, like exercise for example, is the puzzle in itself. So many factors enter into the discussion. Everything from vitamins to excercise , sleep habits, diet, adding antioxidants to your health regimen and even cosmetics !! That's right-cosmetics!! Looking good can promote well being. Emotional problems can cause stress and anxiety. If you take care of yourself, and tactfully use cosmetics, you can really accentuate your natural beauty. Everybody has a different take on the matter. Let's hear your "secrets" to health and beauty.
OK, let's get back to the psoriasis. I suffered from psoriasis about two years. It was localized on my forearms, but still very annoying. The redness, the flaking, the itching was an everyday ordeal. I tried various products that claimed success. They did not work for me. So, started thinking for myself.
Having some background in Biology helped. I started thinking about things like the immune system and its' role in preventing disease. I started thinking about everyday common sense stuff-like moistening the skin and lubricating it with everyday lotions and everyday remedies that work for other skin ailments other than psoriasis. I did some research also.
I wondered about the cause of psoriasis. Research revealed some information that I had already figured out for myself. Things like stress and anxiety aggravating the condition. Being overweight and overtanned-that's right, too much sun-causing flare ups. I had thought that coffee might be a contributing aggravant since it can make you nervous-like stress. I was right.. Maybe I was on the right track.
I had tried calamine lotion. It stopped the itch but not the redness or plague scaly patches. I regularly drink green tea, and found that it is recommended by many herbal remedies. To my surprize, these herbal remedies recommend turmeric-a spice in the ginger family. Supposedly, it helps your digestive tract and helps waste eliminating, and removal of toxins that enter the bloodstream. That led me to think about liver support-amino acids and B12.
My home remedy was evolving. Oh yes, I thought about alcohol as a toxin. Frustration associated with psoriasis can make you reach for a "cold one". That is not helping the matter. Everyone knows that alcohol dries out your skin. Psoriasis can do without that !!
I continued trying to reduce my stress, avoid coffee, drink green tea, take vitamins and supplements , and avoid alcohol. Guess what? It didn't help !! My home remedy was not working. So I started avoiding spicy foods, sauces, and even red meat. I had some understanding from being a biology teacher , that spices and red meat are not really all that great for your digestive system. I also knew that these foods aggravate acne, which I had as a youth,
Then a weird thing hit me. I remembered that my daughter, as a baby, often had severe diaper rash. Diaper rash lotion worked very well for this severe condition. Maybe it could work for psoriasis !
I went to the store and read the label for diaper rash creme. It contained zinc-just like many of the available lotions for psoriasis. Maybe I was on to something. I started using the creme as my remedy.
Wow !! It seemed to help immediately. Then, I started putting it on the scaly areas very heavily. Like a thick paste. It covered the psoriasis and made me feel better not to see the scaly mess: a little psychology , I suppose. Inadvertently, I took a shower with the pasty application. Something told me to pat dry the area and not to remove the creme. In essence, I was hydrating the area and keeping the moisture in the diaper creme.
Now, guess what ? It worked !! The redness was going away and the scaly plague was sloughing off without bleeding.
HENCE: MY FREE HOME REMEDY
It worked for me, as unconventional as it might seem. Let me just add that I had
continued to try to eat healthier and followed some of the ideas generated in the remedy thought process.
HEY, GIVE IT A SHOT. CONSULT WITH YOUR DOCTOR.
It might work for you also. Thanks for reading about my free home remedy tip.

DANDRUFF 1/22/09
Do you have dandruff ? You know, those annoying flakes on your head and shoulders !!
Dandruff is caused by the shedding of skin cells mixing with sebum. Sebum is scalp oil. Normal skin cells die after one month and are replaced by new cells. When skin cells die in 5 to 7 days, dandruff occurs. There simply is too much shedding.
There is no evidence that diet, perspiration or climate affect dandruff. However, I did find out that scalp fungus can aggravate the situation. The fungus metabolizes the sebum and creates oleic acid. The fungus is always on your scalp, but the excessive flaking mixed with sebum and oleic acid create the redness. Anti-fungal shampoos attack the fungus and other additives remove dead cells and stop production of new cells.
When shopping for an anti-fungal shampoo , look for the active ingredient, Ketoconazole. It seems to do the best job of all .
I suffered with dandruff for years. I tried all the available brands with limited results. On day, my grandmother gave me some advise. "Wash your hair with OCTAGON soap." , she said. "It removes the oil, and cleans the scalp.". She also told me that when she was a girl, people used corn starch to absorb the scalp oil. They would apply baby oil to remove the flaking and then put corn starch on the scalp to absorb the baby oil and scalp oil. Followed up by OCTAGON wash, they were finished treating the dandruff.
I don't know if OCTAGON soap is still available. It was a tan bar of soap, and I believe it contained olive oil. I tried her home remedy and it worked better than the shampoos. The shampoos only caused irritation. That was years ago. Maybe todays' shampoos are better. I don't have dandruff anymore. Personally, I believe that stress played a role in my developing dandruff . It seems to make sense. Decreases blood flow to the scalp..... etc;. Just a theory.

NAIL CARE 2/17/09
Do you have problems with soft or splitting nails? Usually, the problem can be corrected
by taking vitamins. Various vitamin supplements containing the correct nutrients for healthy nails are available. The key ingredient is vitamin E. Vitamin E can also be found in foods like meat, nuts, and legumes.
Another important nutrient is gelatin. Eating Jello or jelly can supply your body with gelatin.
Topical applications, to the nails , also help. A good application is Barielle which is applied to the tip of the nail to prevent splitting.
My home remedy also involves gelatin. Take some warm water and add gealtin powder. Soak your nails for about 15 minutes. Then, add a topical application like vitamin E oil. Believe me........ it works !!

EYE VITAMINS 3/19/09
Many of use take vitamin supplements, but hardly give a thought to vitamins for your eyes.
There are certain vitamins contained in foods that are good for our eyes. We can also take them as supplements. The three most important vitamins are :
vitamin C
vitamin A
vitamin E
If we eat vitamin rich diets, then we probably will not have eye problems. However, many factors influence eye diseases and exposure to light alone can cause oxidation of eye proteins.
Therefore, it is a good idea to supplement ones' diet.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant. It counters the effects of oxidation. Citrus fruits are a good source of vitamin C. Vitamin A can be found in carrots , sweet potatoes and liver. Vitamin A may help in reducing the risk of cataract formation, and aid in night vision.Vitamin E, found in almonds and hazelnuts, reduces the risk of macular degeneration.
So, eat a healthy, vitamin rich diet, and take vitamins to compliment your daily intake.
Personally, I try to eat as as much vitamin C rich foods as possible, and supplement with 1000mg of C each day. I also take Vitamin A and E gels daily. A handful of nuts, and some cooked carrots.........well, now you can clearly SEE ....that I am trying to take care of my eyes.
How are you taking care of your eyes ?

POMEGRANATE AND ARTHRITIS 4/16/09
Pomegranate juice is known to have strong antioxidant qualities.
A pomegranate is a fruit that contains ruby red arils....
capsules filled with juice and a tiny edible seed. The antioxidant qualities are
due to polyphenols. It has been shown, through research, that pomegrante extract can
help fight cancer. It is also helpful in treating osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Pomegranate extract: :
- Reduces inflammation
- stops overproduction of
inflammatory molecules
These effects of pomegranate extract help to protect cartilage.
The only downside is that pomegranate can interact with medications like:
ACE inhibitors
blood pressure meds
statins
CONSULT A DOCTOR IF YOU ARE ON
MEDICATIONS, AND PLAN TO TAKE
PRODUCTS CONTAINING
POMEGRANATE EXTRACT.
Personally, I get greedy. I love to mix pomegranate juice, with
aloe vera and products containing quercetin. Quercetin is also a great antioxidant.
Mix in a little resveratrol.....contained in grape juice,
AND YOU HAVE A GREAT COCKTAIL !!!
NEVER HEARD OF QUERCETIN ? FRS

HYDROXYCUT 6/01/09
Have you heard all the news about Hydroxycut ? Not much home remedy stuff in this post, but a warning if you are not aware of the recent FDA recall. Hydroxycut is the brand name of about 750 items sold in 70 countries for women's weight loss. It is manufactured by Lovate Health Science and marketed as as one of the top weight loss products.
The problem is liver damage. There have been about 23 cases in seven years associated with this product. Not a very large percentage of user problems, but nevertheless the FDA wants everyone aware of the danger. The "adverse effect" or unexpected /unitended event has prompted an advisory and Lovate initiated the recall.
There are some good ingredients in Hydroxycut like green tea and white tea exract as well as Oolong tea and Hydroxy tea.The active ingredient is cissus quadrangularis which comes from a medicinal plant grown in Ceylon and India. The product also contains a lot of caffeine and gelatin...gelatin has caused digestive problems in some people.
With all the diet plans available, it might be a good idea to look elsewher if you have been using Hydroxycut.
Have you lost weight with Hydroxycut ?

PS: I have read many reports that don't give a "thumbs up " for this product.

Decaying Leaves 10/24/09
It's fall in the Northeast USA and the holiday season is upon us. First, there is Halloween on October 31, soon to be followed by Thanksgiving and eventually Christmas. The appearance of falling leaves marks the season. But, many of us are not aware of a lurking danger; far worse than any Halloween story.
Raking falling leaves is a serious business. Raking them into the street can clog sewer drains. The decaying leaves also impact the water quality. This is because decaying leaves promote algae growth.
Why ? Phosphorous from decaying leaves is a nurtient needed by algae. Blue green algae contains toxins that affect water quality. Not to mention, the effects of breathing air contaminated by these toxins can trigger an asthma attack.
As you rake leaves, especially wet leaves, you are sturring up mold , mildew and algae toxins. When algae enters the water ,it uses up oxygen and can kill fish. Algae inhalation cannot be good for you.
Mold and mildew are not any better. Mold replicates by spores sticking to wet surfaces. Wherever it reproduces, it destroys the environment. However, it is beneficial in the decomposition of leaves.
So, just consider the potential danger of raking leaves with algae toxins, mold and mildew.
Consider mold spores sticking to your nasal passages and lungs. Mold exposure can also cause conjunctivitis and nasal congestion.
Also, when you are finished raking, you are probably bringing spores and algae into your home.
What can you do ?
Well, you must clean up the leaves. But, try to use a mask to cover your nose and mouth. Your eyes will still be exposed, so you can use protective goggles.
You might look like Halloween yourself !!!
But, at least you won't feel like a Goblin kicked your b--- !!

Thanksgiving and Corn 11/21/09
It's Thanksgiving time again. Spending quality time with family and friends, we must
not forget to give thanks to God for all that we have. Like the Pilgrims of 1621, we enjoy
delicious dishes at the family banquet.
Accounts of the first Thanksgiving, tell us that the Pilgrims and Indians dined on
wild turkeys and venison. We also know that dried fruits, herbs and corn were served.
Corn, or maize was a staple food of the Indians. It is still one of the most popular cereals
in the world today.
Corn is very nutritious.
Corn contains:
phosphorus
magnesium
manganese
zinc
iron
selenium
Corn also contains vitamin B and traces amounts of vitamin A and E.
Corn is good for your skin, nervous system
and helps to lower cholesterol.
Enjoy your Thansgiving and be sure to include corn in your meal.
