 Where do you write best?

Since I’m participating in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and organizing events for my area, I’m spending more time trying to in coffee houses and in other public places. Now, I already know this doesn’t work well for me. I write best in a quiet, non-distracted environment. And I need a comfy chair. I do best at home, though the comfy sofa in the thoughts.com living room area works well too. Which means it does have a comfy home feel to it.

But I have a friend who thrives on writing in coffee houses and says she can’t really focus when she’s at home because there are too many distractions. I know every year with Nanowrimo we have a fair number of people who come to the write-ins so they can get out of the house and perhaps away from the kids. And others who come for the social aspects.

Other writers I know set up home offices and sit down each day to write on an office schedule. They tell me that having a designated writing time and location keeps them focused. And to make a living from writing, they do have to treat it like a business. I think I’ve spent too many years as a writer of non-fiction in desks and offices for that set up to work for my fiction writing.

Have you discovered where you write best? An office? At home? In a coffee house?

I write best at home, in my room, with no distractions. However, I'm never inspired to write then. I never get inspiration sitting at a computer. For that, I have to be either taking a shower or walking. Sometimes I can summon the creativity by pacing back in forth in the house like a crazy person. Otherwise, I go for a walk and try to remember everything that I think of when I go back to writing.

Would that friend be Janelle who has a thing for tea?:P heh. Seems befitting of a tea party "hatress" to hang out at a coffee shop:P

I suppose the discipline method works if you treat it like homework and have a balanced life. But, if your life lacks in other areas, your focus is going to falter. Getting enough fresh air, exercise and proper food in your day is just as important. As is 1 and 2:P

I always write in as quiet a space I can find in my home. But, I might try writing in the park or a forest before I make a concrete decision. I did try writing in a park once before...but the birds, breezes and passerbys still managed to distract and bother me. But, I did enjoy the sunshine and fresh air(which gradually made me hungry and sleepy. And, there is no bathroom in the park:P So...

Seems a rather easy question, afterall:P

Yes! Jeremy is right. No inspiration really comes from sitting at home. That's why I need a digital voice recorder and to probably be on foot somewhere. Walking and showering often stimulate the brain:P I also realize that an empty or simple labor day does not do anything to stimulate the mind. We need to interact with others, witness strangers in action or at least get some blood flowing to stimulate the mind. To simply sit in an office chair and say "Ok, let's get writing" is no good. But, a firmer chair(not too firm) is better than a comfy couch, sometimes. Too much comfort puts my legs and mind to sleep. I need a little firmness for focus.

No, I'm not the coffee house friend. I write best in my head. Lucky for me, it goes wherever I do.

I keep notebooks everywhere, my bedside, my Jeep, my office, sadly even my bathroom. Quite often I come up with something to write about when I shower so I reach for the hand towel and pencil and jot down the gist of my thoughts and any lines to a poem I might be thinking of. I also think of things to write about while driving. I can not really sit down at the computer and write something. I like to write it out in my notebook first. At work, I keep a word file open and type occasionally in it during my day. Problem with that is if I don't post it or email it to my self at home before I leave the office, it has to wait until the next day.

Since I live alone (no kids or partner)I thrive on quiet but find that without the radio on or some noise, I cant sit down and write anything. Odd huh.

I agree with Heather about the notebooks. I also have them all over the place and find them invaluable as a writer. I also know writers, however, who refuse to use them because they think it takes away from the spontaneous aspect of writing.

Jeremy, I suffer from OCPD and tend to write in pencil when ever I can. When I am writing in my notebooks, for some reason I only write in red pen. Glad I am not the only one who finds notebooks handy. :0

I do most of my writing either in the library or at home. I prefer writing at home at my desk in my room when working on school assignments. If it's just blogging or surfing I usually end up on the couch or my bed. Very comfy.

Love writing at home. Preferably with music. I become inspired by listening to music :)

I usually write long hand first in either a notebook or a yellow legal pad as sort of a rought draft deal, and then I go on type.
