  • Barack Obama and Gay Marriage

Yesterday Barack Obama announced his support for gay marriage, he is the first sitting president to support it. Do you think he truly meant his support or do you feel it was a publicity stunt for his re-election?

Here are some takes on it to help you decide:

    Non-believers:

    1.  It's a stunt for him to win re-election

    2. He has always been wishy-washy on the subject

“I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages,” in 1996 while up for Illinois state Senate.

“Undecided,” while running for re-election to state Senate in 1998, when asked, “Do you favor legalizing same-sex marriage?”

“I was reminded that it is my obligation not only as an elected official in a pluralistic society, but also as a Christian, to remain open to the possibility that my unwillingness to support gay marriage is misguided,” while a U.S. Senator, in 2006

    3. Obama can largely get away with supporting same-sex marriage because he has no power to enact it

    Believers:

    1. His opinion on gay marriage has evolved over time and he not only has explained why he hesitated but his reasons for supporting it

"At this point, what I've said is, is that my baseline is a strong civil union that provides them the protections and the legal rights that married couples have. And I think—and I think that's the right thing to do. But I recognize that from their perspective it is not enough, and I think is something that we're going to continue to debate and I personally am going to continue to wrestle with going forward."

"I had hesitated on gay marriage in part because I thought civil unions would be sufficient, that that was something that would give people hospital visitation rights and other elements that we take for granted, and I was sensitive to the fact that for a lot of people, you know, the word 'marriage' was something that evokes very powerful traditions, religious beliefs, and so forth."

"I struggle with this. I have friends, I have people who work for me, who are in powerful, strong, long-lasting gay or lesbian unions. And they are extraordinary people, and this is something that means a lot to them and they care deeply about," Obama said.

    2. Gay marriage is still a very controversial issue and supporting it could cause him to lose many votes

  • Why I feel a little less wild today

Maurice Sendak, author of  'Where the Wild Things Are', died at 83.

Where the Wild Things Are has always been a favorite children's book of mine.

I loved to act out all of the parts of the book and run around my room trying to go on my own wild adventures as a kid. I would join in on the crazy rumpus dance, nash my teeth and roar a terrible roar and sail around the world.

In high school, I took creative writing. I ended up taking it for two years,  but the first class got me hooked. The teacher, still my favorite teacher to this day, read Where the Wild Things Are on the first day of class. He acted out the entire book as I did as a child. He then came over to my desk at one of the wild parts, roared and cleared everything off of my desk.  From that day on, I took every class this teacher offered. I had some of the most creative and fun times to date  since I have graduated high school 7 years ago.

So... today on Yahoo news, a little headline rolls by that Maruice Sendak died. He has fueled so many happy memories for me...

I believe there is a wild thing that lives inside of us all as did Maurice. The wild thing in me will definitely be a little quieter today...

Looks like it's time to roar, nash my teeth and sail around the world with my nieces and nephews as soon as possible.

My first Halloween at Thoughts, I came as Max from where Where the Wild Things are ;)image

    RIP Maruice Sendak
