Why the Yankees won the World series
Time to delve into my specialty, sports.
Before reading this, bear in mind that I have no allegiance to the Yankees or Phillies.
The Yankees won the World Series last night over the Phillies in Game 6. It was their 27th World Series title and first since 2000. If you didn't know, the franchise with the next most championships are the Cardinals with 10. The name "World" Series was never more apparent as Hideki Matsui, a legend in Japan before signing with the Bronx Bombers in 2002, was named the MVP. Matsui tied a World Series record for a single game by driving in six runs for the 7-3 victory.
The title comes after spending $423 million on the acquisition of A.J. Burnett, CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira and the first season in the new Yankee Stadium (priced at $1.5 billion). I'm not saying the Yankees bought the championship. No matter how fat your wallet is, you have to put it out on the field and that's what the Yankees did. It just so happened that Matsui stepped up and stole the show in the series, hitting .615 overall and starting only three of the six games.
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi is one of a few all-time to play for and coach the same franchise to a World Series championship. It's the fifth Yankee championship for the "Core Four" -- Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettite and Mariano Rivera. It's the first for Alex Rodriguez, who was acquired in 2004.
The Phillies, world champions last year, had their share of ups and downs in the series. Chase Utley tied Mr. October Reggie Jackson for the most home runs in the world series with five. And, big-time slugger Ryan Howard set the strikeout record for a series with 13.
Looking ahead to next year, the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry will be ever more present. The Yankees will start and end the season with a series at Fenway, the first time since 1950.
