 Is Facebook falling?
Greetings!

No introductions needed if you read my profile. This is my first post but, since I'm pretty hardcore into news, I'll just jump right into it.

How long do you think the social networking site Facebook is going to last in our world of ever-growing technology? Yes, I know people offered the same skepticism years ago and it's still going strong today, but chew on this. As of right now, their fastest-growing demographic is 55 and older. What first started out as a collegiate social networking site is on the verge of becoming, dare I say it, uncool. Please don’t be offended as I’m not an ageist. It’s simply what has been in the news.

Sure, Facebook has gained 300 million users in just six years of existence, but did you know that it just turned over its first profit last month? With the rise of Twitter, people are looking for simplicity and a quick exchange of pertinent information. Facebook doesn’t provide that anymore with the increasing number of applications, groups and friend requests. People are becoming inundated with more information than they need or desire so they are cutting back on friends or deleting their account entirely. Some don’t have time for it anymore. Some don’t want their personal lives and work lives crossing. Either way, there will be new social networking sites, such as the lovely thoughts.com, coming into fruition and Facebook will have to adapt, just like everyone else.

In lighter and related news, a film about the creation of Facebook, called The Social Network, is in the works to be released in 2010. Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men, The American President, Charlie Wilson’s War) is writing it, David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Fight Club, Panic Room) is directing it, Jessie Eisenburg (Adventureland, Zombieland) will play Facebook-creator Mark Zuckerberg and Justin Timberlake will play Sean Parker (Facebook’s first company president). The drama will tell the story of how Mark Zuckerberg turned Facebook from a Harvard dorm-room experiment into the world’s most popular social networking site. With Timberlake on the cast, expect to see some comedy as well, i.e. "Homelessville" SNL skit below from a few years back.

So, do you think this production is a precursor to Facebook’s demise or will it help membership and keep it relevant?

Timberlake is going to be in that movie? I'm so disappointed. I'll still see it, though, because I've seen everything else Fincher has done and so far I've loved all of them (though "Benjamin Button" was a little tedious). Personally, I think Facebook will stick around longer, but I think it's days are numbered. Sites like that seem to get really hot and then burn out for exactly the reason you stated. Anything that becomes a huge trend eventually becomes overexposed and then becomes uncool. Then it's time to find the next cool trend. If they can stick around for the long run it will be because they were able to adapt to the times so that the site always has whatever that next cool trend is.

Yeah my initial reaction...disappointment that Timberlake would be cast.

As for FaceBook... it will stick aorund... 55plusers seem to love all the little 'game apps' and they arent all that ineterested in exercising their brains too hard... that's why they use FB. When they want to exercise their brains...they head off to other little venues...while still keeping a window open on FB!! lmtlsao

Either there is gonna have to be some more proceration or the boomers are gonna rule a while.... UNLESS... they git in front of one of them thar 'death panels' sans health care issues. POOF!

But if they make a Facebook movie, won't Tom, everyone's friend on MySpace, be jealous?

So true. My mom and her friends are on Facebook to play games. In fact, I wasn't on Facebook until my mom needed a neighbor on one of her games.

I am active on Facebook now just keeping up with the games I play on there and to find out what it up with friends and family but I still prefer the phone and a good book. :)

Glad you are blogging and thanks for the friends request. :)
