New Swell Season Album by Hansard & Irglov
Today the new Swell Season album hits stores and I’m eager to pick up a copy. For the uninitiated, the Swell Season is the name recently given to the team of the Irish Glen Hansard (former frontman of The Frames) and the Czech Marketa Irglova. On this album and the current tour, they are accompanied by Hansard’s old bandmates from The Frames, though he makes it clear that the Swell Season and The Frames are two separate groups.
Hansard and Irglova are best known for the musical magic they conjured together in the 2006 film Once, which is the most beautiful soundtrack I’ve ever experienced. Word is that the new Swell Season album, called Strict Joy, is a somber collection of break-up tunes, which is a good thing, because Hansard is at his best when he’s depressed. The lead single, “Low Rising,” definitely fits that criterion.
There’s an excellent article in this month’s Paste magazine about Hansard, where he discusses his musical relationship with Irglova, dealing with the fame that accompanied Once, the state of The Frames, and more.
If the new album is anything like the previous Swell Season effort or the Once soundtrack, it’s sure to be an instant favorite. Is anyone else going to run out and buy it today?
