As if the exorbitant rent prices weren't enough, part of the price of living and meeting people in Chicago is putting up with hippies who love their music "because it moves them". Note: I have no problem with hippies. I like hippie music. My issue is with people who take life too seriously and judge others for the song they picked on itunes this morning...It seems like there are more shows in this city than there are ATM machines so I'm trying to wrap my head around why we can't all just pick and choose what we like and at the same time- get along?
I'm usually pretty good about blocking out the stupid comments from those music lovers who berrate anyone that likes something that's played on the radio. They really have nothing better to do than search online for a band no one has ever heard of so they can proclaim 6 months from now, "I knew them before they were big" Would you like a trophy for your discovery? I know you have nothing better to do but give it a rest. Guess what- that band you've been replaying on your computer for the last 6 hours is going to be big soon but then I'm guessing you'll be through with them right? If Dave Matthews means something to me or "moves me" how is that any different than Morphine "moving you"? Really, please answer that, I'm dying to know. Chicago is full of self-righteous a$$holes who think the fact that they spend countless hours a day searching for new music that no one knows, somehow makes them some kind of cultural hero. Why do you have to make listening to good beats some sort of fierce competition?
I digress, back to my point...This morning I stumbled upon a blog that was clearly written about me using the word "annoying" to define my lack of knowledge about bands that play at hole in the wall bars with an attendance of 10... max. After reading said blog, I laughed and moved on, mostly at the mind-shattering stupidity of both the statement and the entire existence of this blogger, not to mention the other hippies who commented. You'd think with all your enlightened, musical beauty, being open-minded and nonjudgmental would be key in your day to day relationships. BUT unless someone likes EVERYTHING that you like, you deem them annoying? So sit around all you brainless activists talking about the lyrics to the latest garage band you found on limewire and how it seemed to speak to you last night in a dream and in some profound way changed your life today. I'll be listening to The Fray and counting down the days until Dave Matthews visits Chicago again. For all too soon your band of the week will get big (thanks to people like you supporting them now) and you'll have to make room for the next. Once your life has turned into the directionless mess it is destined to become, I hope "Most Serence Republic" is still providing you some sort of emotional salvation in your lonely Chicago loft. And be careful about what you post online for the public to see.
