 My Life Off The A-List

This morning I felt a great sense of urgency as I got ready for my day at the office. Does my hair look all right? Does my outfit make me look fat? Should I be a little more dressy? Are my boobs even? Is there anything stuck between my teeth?

I'm sure you're thinking corporate visit, meeting, promotion...no, no, and no. As I found out second-hand yesterday we have an A-List. I was expecting to find a red carpet and Ryan Seacrest shoving a microphone in my face as I was about to enter in to my usual day. Red typically does not translate well on camera I was aware of this getting ready. I wore earth tones.

Somedays the gossip makes me feel like Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie. But that's typical in any work enviroment. I've heard more rumors about who I'm dating and is she or isn't she (pregnant). To let it be known I've had the same boyfriend for the past 3 1/2 years and we have one 1/2 year-old son. No plans to stray, no plans to break-up, no plans to procreate.

Like I said, yesterday I found out we apparently have an A-List. There was an email from a co-worker inviting a select group of co-workers to the apparent greatest Happy Hour event ever. The selected individuals were the "attractive" bunch and the kiss-assers to this particular employee. And she referred to them as the A-List. It's like the Vanity Fair Party at the Oscars! Wonder if Wolfgang Puck will be perfecting the menu? She even stated it was a draft list and would be perfecting it...will their be a talent competition? Hazing? Chinese water torture?

Now typically it's been my knowledge and experience that when you throw an "office party" you invite the entire office, like them or not. Because in a public place you can avoid. I do it all the time, it's managable.

So of course the fact that we have a steady functioning gossip-mill this email was passed along the grape vine. Which my first retort was to start a B-List. You know us poor unfortunate less attractive, inferior female, lipstick still intact, clean nose individuals who will surely suffer from undersocilization because of this.

Aren't we all supposed to rally together against the man? Stand as one in a cruel work enviroment? Apparently not. I wasn't aware the office politics had become so caddy and jaded that it was now like Hollywood. To quote Heidi Klum "One day you're in. And the next day you're out." Heck I heard her kick two people out before I left yesterday...

Once the A-Listers take over who knows what will happen. Will we become so restricted in our social dealings that our lives will be reduced to network such as the Caste System. Allowed to work and mingle among our designated group. Become so overrought with petty dealings that nothing good will be accomplished?

This particular person is not someone with room to move through the company. Her position is such that she shouldn't even be dealing with the social network in the office too deeply. But that hasn't stopped her from tearing through several individuals already. How much is too much? When does it become high school cafeteria bullshit all over again? What is appropriate and ethical when it comes to socializing with your workmates?
