"Today, I Weep For My Country"

The speech given by Sen. Robert Byrd

Exactly five years ago, on the afternoon of March 19, 2003, mere hours before bombs began falling in Baghdad, Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., gave a speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate condemning the use of military force in Iraq. As soon as Byrd was finished speaking, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., delivered a response defending the Bush administration's decision to go to war.

And I continue to weep. The war decision was wrong, the patriot act was wrong. the fallout is wrong. Everything's wrong.

But I personally believe we made a commitment when 1st we took that path, and we cannot go back on that commitment lest we once again turn away from what it means to be Amreican.

Poor option but once committed I think we need to stay the course in order to be true to us. If not then we only lend credence to what the world thinks of us.

Doing differently is only more cause to weep, and I do enough of that already.

I'm not defending our incumbent government by any means. They've brought us closed to the end of true "America" then even the civil war.

But what real choice do we have if we're to be true to our ideals?

We've lost our ideals by continuing this charade. Our administration is planning yet another war. We've turned away from what it means to be an American by continuing to commit ourselves to a lie simply to save face. And what the world thinks of us is continuously turning more rotten. And this is the result of continuing our commitment. To admit to the world our error, pull away from the mistake, recompense our victims, and ask for forgiveness may be an alternate solution. But not for a proud and arrogant people.

Interesting view point. You very well be right. I know I'm not sure of the answer but I do agree it needs to stop.

you me and much of the world. To admit a mistake is difficult. It requires humbleness. And that's something that empire builders are always short on being blinded by their desire for more power. Our administration is moving ahead with their empire at a faster pace than ever before. We would not need all these defensive moves if our foreign policies took into consideration the soveirnty of other peoples. But instead it's based on capitalism and corporate greed. Until we Americans begin to own up to that, we will continue to get the kind of government we deserve.
