"They have always taught and trained you to believe it to be your patriotic duty to go to war and to have yourselves slaughtered at their command. But in all the history of the world you, the people, have never had a voice in declaring war, and strange as it certainly appears, no war by any nation in any age has ever been declared by the people." - Eugene Debs:  - Socialist candidate for president, June 16, 1918 - The speech led to Debs's being stripped of his citizenship and sent to jail for 10 years.

"If I were the president, I could stop terrorist attacks against the United States in a few days. Permanently. I would first apologize to all the widows and orphans, the tortured and impoverished, and all the many millions of other victims of American imperialism. Then I would announce, in all sincerity, to every corner of the world, that America's global interventions have come to an end, and inform Israel that it is no longer the 51st state of the USA but now -- oddly enough -- a foreign country.  would then reduce the military budget by at least 90% and use the savings to pay reparations to the victims. There would be more than enough money.  One year's military budget of 330 billion dollars is equal to more than $18,000 an hour for every hour since Jesus Christ was born.  That's what I'd do on my first three days in the White House.  On the fourth day, I'd be assassinated." --William Blum, author of "Killing Hope:  U.S. Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II," and "Rogue State:  A Guide to the World's Only Superpower"

Nor will war ever be declared by the People evermore. Why? There's too darn many of us. Every nation has its representatives, just like Debs was trying to be. Irony aside, war is inevitable, but wasting money is not. That we don't look at wars from an economical standpoint is a curious anomaly unique to our own time.

I would certainly love to be proud of my country...but I have not allowed pride to be supplied through ignorance. I spent 4 years in the military. I saw more of the world in those 4 years than most see in a lifetime. Along the way I met many wonderful "foreigners." And that is a word I use lightly. I discovered in those years just how intertwined we all are in this world and chose then not to call anyone a "foreigner." We are all of the same race.
It was only after doing extensive research on American transnational corporations that I began to see the ugly side of this nations "foreign" relations abuses. Anyone who believes Iraq is being fought for the ideals of liberty, freedom, etc., has allowed ignorance to supply their pride. What national interests that are being protected is not the interest of the average American citizen, but the American elite. Today, these may be more secure, but the policies they pursue overseas has not made you, nor I or any other average individual any more secure. In fact, we are less so.

I can apreciate your patriotism friend, but do not let ignorance supply the pride necessary to keep it. The Germans did just that before world war II.

Please read my article submission "Like Silt in a River." Never put blind faith in anything of this world...especially your government. War is only inevitable when people do just that, as when they allow ignorance to supply their pride.
