W. Zambrano (9-3) Looper (9-6) SV. Wood (22)
Recap: The Cubs were able to take the first game of their 3-game series with the Cardinals with some good pitching by Carlos Zambrano and two big home runs. Carlos Zambrano came off the DL and was impressive, going 6 innings and only allowing 4 hits, while giving up 0 earned runs. He also struck out 5 hitters and hit a single at the plate in his first at-bat since coming off the DL. The Cubs didn't get a lot of offense in the game, but it was enough. Kosuke Fukudome hit a homerun in the 1st inning, his 7th on the year, to put the Cubs on top early. Then in the 4th inning, Geovany Soto hit a solo homerun of his own, his 14th on the year, to give the Cubs a 2-0. Soto had a 3 hits on the night, while Derrek Lee went 2-4 with a 2B. Bob Howry did give up a HR to Albert Pujols, but that was the only run the Cards would score. Neal Cotts came in and struck out known HGH-user Rick Ankiel and then Kerry Wood came in and saved his 22nd game of the year. The Cubs are now 52-35 on the year and now lead the Cardinals by 3.5 games for the lead in the NL Central.
