 The Games People Play
Part One

Monopoly

The Invitation

Her eyes scanned the shelves crammed full with boxes of board games.  It had been a long time since she'd bought any games, but her neice was coming up to her eleventh birthday and she wanted to give her something she could enjoy with others, rather than sitting at the laptop pressing buttons.  The traditionalist in her couldn't allow the purchase of computer games, no matter how much she tried to relax her ideas.

Near the top of the unit a green-edged box lay alone.  She stood on tip-toe, scrabbling at the edge with her fingertips, stretching her calf muscles.      The box slowly tipped off the shelf and slipped neatly into her waiting hand.  She brushed the dust from the lid and gazed at her favourite childhood game.  Monopoly.

On the very few occasions she'd been beaten at Monopoly, she'd had to ponder her tactics and hone her plans before she'd play again.
Winning was important to her, she liked to be in control and losing simply wasn't an option.  It made her angry, more with herself than anyone else playing.
She'd boil away inside, not that anyone else would guess from her cool exterior, she'd choose her opponents carefully and outwit them with subterfuge.
Standing in the queue at the till, she wondered just who she was really buying the game for.

The skin on her back began to tingle as she cast her mind back.  then it started to glow, making her feel unexpectedly alive.  For a moment she thought the memories were bringing the warm sensation, then she realised that a tall young man with long wavy dark blonde hair was standing right behind her, just a touch too close, his energy nibbling at the edges of her personal space.

She turned to be met with a pair of intensely blue eyes surrounded by thick long lashes.  His face lifted as his smile spread.
"Is that for you"?  He asked, flitting his eyes toward the box held tightly in her hands.  He smiled again, a lovely open friendly smile.  She was surprised.  At her age not many young men engaged her in conversation, let alone smiling at her.   Over forty meant over the hill to her, and she'd all but give up hope of rekindling her youth.  Family demands took most of her energy and what little she had left she'd apply to her artwork, the pastels and watercolours that spoke of her inner turmoil.

"Errmmm.. no, actually" she stammered, surprised at how her hands had started to shake a little.  His energy was very strong and she found the tingling was rapidly intensifying.  "It's for my neice, she errrm..."  she hesitated.  telling this young man how old her neice was would give away her own age, and despite feeling old, she'd weathered time quite well, looking a good eight to ten years younger than her true age.

"Do you play"?  he asked, smiling that devastating smile again.  "Years ago I did, but... you know..." she tailed off again.
It seemed everything she said would eventually lead to him realising she was forty-something and not thirty-something!
"I play too" A slight wink from those thick eyelashes brought a smile to her face and she began to relax.  "In fact, I have a little club.  Just a few people who enjoy the game.  Friday nights at eight thirty, my place".
She searched his face for any signs of deceit, but found none, he seemed just so friendly, and the thought of getting out into younger company and exercising her power games thrilled her.

"It's okay", he grinned, there's other ladies that go too.  "If you want to that is, you're most welcome".  "Here's my address".
As he started to jot his address and phone number down on the back of an old receipt, a man with a loaded trolly arrived behind him in the queue.  He automatically moved forward, and a little further into her personal space, which was already charged enough to create a spark!

"Give me a ring during the day on Friday if you'd like to come".
He grinned again, and as she tapped in her pin number for her neice's birthday gift, her body told her how very much she'd like
to come....
