 korean ways
  • -slurping your soup is not impolite, it simply means you’re enjoying what you’re eating...(great compliment to the cook)
  • -eat rice with a spoon, especially if there’s meat or vegetables on it
  • -boys and girls cannot be seen crying (even children)
  • -women cannot smoke in public
  • -women should not wear revealing tops (turtle necks are preferable), but really short skirts are ok
  • -never give with your left hand. The polite way is to give (and receive) with your right hand, or both hands.
  • -washing machines empty after spin cycle onto the floor
  • -floor heating systems (perfect for sleeping on the floor and eating sitting on the floor)
  • -shower heads are usually located near the sink or toilet...no tub…a simple drain on the bathroom floor is sufficient.
  • -never lift your bowl as you are eating
  • -never get out of the taxi by the driver side door. (I’m pretty certain it’s actually illegal)
  • -refrain from blowing your nose in public…burping and slurping is allowed
  • -don’t start/finish eating before the eldest person at the table
  • -sharing utensils is ok
  • -double dipping is ok
  • -throwing snowballs at school is ok
  • -respect your elders
  • -2-3 university degrees is now the norm
  • -women should always obey her parents, then her husband, then her son.
  • -never stick your chopsticks upright into your rice (it signifies the death of someone)
  • -social standing is very important. A parent will often not accept that their kid should repeat a grade (even if it means them continuing to fall behind for years to come)
  • if left handed, changing to right-handed is highly recommended
