| Capoeira |
|
About a month ago I met a Belgium girl named Geraldine. She informed me that Capoeira lessons were being held near Muyenga where we both stay. She had been attending twice a week for a few months, and suggested I come check It out. I was interested right away. Capoeira is a form a martial arts that was disguised as a form of dance. I believe it originated in Angola by the slaves. They would practice this form of “dance” to then be able to fight their masters and escape. The classes are about 2 ½ hours, twice a week. Attending was exhilarating; it’s a really powerful work-out. The first hour is stretching and warm-ups, and the second half, you learn some moves and put them into a fighting routine. At the end you form a circle, singing and playing traditional music instruments, and two at a time you go into the middle and battle. It’s really intriguing to watch…and even more so to participate. It looks like a dance because there is no actual physical contact, but it also looks like a form of graceful martial arts…absolute precision, grace and balance are necessary skills.
