A little after 10pm she started showing signs she was tired but also that she was in pain. She arched her back as she cried out and I assumed it was gas. Nothing comforted her, walking, being on her back, patting her back, pumping her legs…even Gas X didn’t do the trick. We were downstairs then moved up. I laid her next to me on the bed and laid next to her. She seemed to calm down a bit but yet still was hurting. She turned her face toward me and then away, again and again as she cried.
Normally at this point Joanna would take over (Aubrey finds amazing comfort when she is with her mom) but she was traveling back with the youth from Cedar Point. So Aubrey reached over with her little hand and focused her energy and attention on my facial hair. She gently touched it and seemed to find comfort. She stared at me and was quiet. After about 5 minutes she fell asleep.
While I was trying to comfort her I thought about the significance of things or people that bring us comfort. We run to everything from TV, movies, alcohol, our “guilty pleasures”, to relationships with people.
In what or how, do you find comfort?
Aubrey found comfort in that moment with me and she focused on a feature of me. The Psalmist wrote in Psalm 27:4-5, “One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.”
When King David wrote these words I can only imagine what he was thinking or going through. He did know that he could and would find his comfort by being close to the Lord and focusing upon him. There is safety and comfort in this shelter. May you find this to be true in your life today.
*The rest of the story. Once Aubrey was asleep I picked her up carried her to her crib and laid her in it. She was still asleep. I put up the side of the crib and did not put it in the right spot and therefore there was a loud noise. Aubrey woke up and cried loud! I tried to calm her again but ended up taking her downstairs for a change of scenery. Her Grandma Bennett gave her some juice and she was the happiest she had been for 3-4 hours. She was laughing and smiling at both of us. Shortly after some juice she fell asleep and went to bed with ease. Maybe she just needed grandma and juice.
