| Obama-Rama: The fun continues |
|
While the news media are agog over the heat Senator Obama is getting about some recent remarks about certain American voters, Republican Senator John McCain has leveled perhaps an even more serious charge, not just about Obama, but about any Democratic nominee.
In an interview published last week in Newsweek magazine, McCain repeated his view that the challenges posed by Islamic extremism are the greatest to America -- above all other issues. Further, said McCain, "I do not believe that anyone who fails to understand the dimensions and enormity of this (extremist) challenge is qualified to serve as president of the United States."
With that, McCain has thrown down the gauntlet, shown what he believes is a vital issue, and, further, issued a challenge to not only Democrats who must pick a presidential nominee, but really to the American public as well. And while as yet we have noticied no Democrat replying to this, the issue of Islamic extremism, and how and what America's response should be, is certain to be a central issue in the upcoming campaign.
Thus far, both Obama and Clinton have campaigned as doves on the war issue, plying for Democratic votes. Either is certain to change the message somewhat once the nomination battle is settled, and independent votes become crucial to the outcome of the campaign.
Another certainty is that Sen. McCain, the Republican nominee, will continue to supply the heat on this issue, all the way to November 7.
