Job 41:12-34 (HCSB)
12 I cannot be silent about his limbs,
his power, and his graceful proportions.
13 Who can strip off his outer covering?
Who can penetrate his double layer of armor?
14 Who can open his jaws,
surrounded by those terrifying teeth?
15 [His] pride is in [his] rows of scales,
closely sealed together.
16 One scale is so close to another
that no air can pass between them.
17 They are joined to one another,
so closely connected they cannot be separated.
18 His snorting flashes with light,
while his eyes are like the rays of dawn.
19 Flaming torches shoot from his mouth;
fiery sparks fly out!
20 Smoke billows from his nostrils
as from a boiling pot or [burning] reeds.
21 His breath sets coals ablaze,
and flames pour out of his mouth.
22 Strength resides in his neck,
and dismay dances before him.
23 The folds of his flesh are joined together,
solid as metal and immovable.
24 His heart is as hard as a rock,
as hard as a lower millstone!
25 When Leviathan rises, the mighty are terrified;
they withdraw because of [his] thrashing.
26 The sword that reaches him will have no effect,
nor will a spear, dart, or arrow.
27 He regards iron as straw,
and bronze as rotten wood.
28 No arrow can make him flee;
slingstones become like stubble to him.
29 A club is regarded as stubble,
and he laughs at the whirring of a javelin.
30 His undersides are jagged potsherds,
spreading the mud like a threshing sledge.
31 He makes the depths seethe like a caldron;
he makes the sea like an ointment jar.
32 He leaves a shining wake behind him;
one would think the deep had white hair!
33 He has no equal on earth—
a creature devoid of fear!
34 He surveys everything that is haughty;
he is king over all the proud beasts.
This can only be a dinosaur or a sea monster/creature – fear nothing and cannot be controlled by man, can only be controlled by God.
Our troubles/sorrows/difficulties can be “dinosaurs”. We are powerless to do anything about them – only God has that power. Only God has that control.
Only God has the words of life.
John 6:67-69 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
“to whom shall we go?” – all the alternatives were tried by Solomon in Ecclesiastes:
self medication
working – career (no time to think about it)
women
building great wealth
Solomon’s conclusion from experience is that all is empty (vanity). That only GOD is fullness.
Have you understood all that God has given you?
We don’t have understanding but we know that there is no one else but God to turn to.
Job 42:1-2 (HCSB)
1 Then Job replied to the LORD:
2 I know that You can do anything
and no plan of Yours can be thwarted.
Job is saying that God can do everything and His purpose will be attained. God has a purpose – HE does not play us like chess men.
(Fatalism, a “glad I got that over with” attitude, living with a sense of bad is going to happen no matter what…)
God has a Sovereign purpose – to bring us all to salvation and Glory to Himself
Philippians 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
There is a heavy concern about the US and elections, etc. No matter who is elected God’s ultimate purpose in HIS creation will come to pass. Predestination and free will work together – hand in hand. God is not a mystical and maniacal being doling out who gets to go heaven and who gores to hell.
Believe that God knows and God lets us choose – HIS will/HIS purpose will come to pass.
HIS desire is for all to come unto HIM but HE gives us this choice.
Job 42:3 - 4 (HCSB)
3 [You asked,] "Who is this who conceals [My] counsel with ignorance?"
Surely I spoke about things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.
4 [You said,] "Listen now, and I will speak.
When I question you, you will inform Me."
Job
Job said stuff he didn’t know anything about. Open mouth and demonstrate ignorance.
All of Job’s loss (family, wealth, health) along with God sharing knowledge – now Job knows things that were too wonderful to understand.
Job had to endure the hardship in order to be able to hear and understand what God demonstrated and showed to him. More understanding awaits us at the end of difficulties. We are a hard headed people.
Manly Beasley – 7 fatal disease ravaging his body al at the same time yet he kept on going. God had given him a promise from Psalm (128:6 Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children…). that he would see his children’s children. He died a few years after the grandchild was born. This man had some of the richest material to impart. He was asked by someone “Can I learn what have without going through your trials?” Manly’s answer was “probably not at least not with any real understanding.”
Joseph San (unsure of spelling) – martyrdom and some understandings only come through persecution.
Job 42:5-6 (HCSB)
5 I had heard rumors about You,
but now my eyes have seen You.
6 Therefore I take back [my words]
and repent in dust and ashes.
“my eye sees you”
Hearing about how God stands by you – knowing it for a fact – but there is a whole different level of “knowing” when you have experienced God standing by you.
Job had been on the defense saying he did not deserve this treatment – now he sees himself – abhors himself – repents.
Job 42:7-9 (HCSB)
7 After the LORD had finished speaking to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite: "I am angry with you and your two friends, for you have not spoken the truth about Me, as My servant Job has. 8 Now take seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. Then My servant Job will pray for you. I will surely accept his [prayer] and not deal with you as your folly deserves. For you have not spoken the truth about Me, as My servant Job has." 9 Then Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the LORD had told them, and the LORD accepted Job's [prayer].
God turns His attention to the 3 friends – HE is angry because they were not speaking truth.
This is the church’s failing today – not sticking with God’s truth.
Ephesians 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
We need to be telling people that without Jesus they are going to hell. If the bridge is out and your child is driving and you know what is ahead, you will do everything in your power to get that message to them. It should be as natural a reaction to warn someone of the price of their sin as it is to warn someone a bridge is out.
We must see where we are without God and once we see this – God gives us hope.
He does not say “I like you but I don’t like what you are saying” – No, His anger is against Eliphaz for not speaking the truth.
Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
Must have both faith and love. Job had spoken truth but he was in wrong with his pride.
God wanted Job to deal with his pride – take focus off himself so God tells him to pray for his friends.
Be careful not to make everything about you. There are times when you may need special attention, for example on an airplane –put the oxygen mask on yourself 1st then on your child – only focus on us 1st when it means we can help others better;
Ex: caregiver gets worn out and even sick themselves because they did not focus on self.
In verse 10, Job prays for his friends. God restores Job’s losses.
The Lord Restored.
Repent
Replace
Restore
When you get out of God’s will, you must go through these 3 “R’s”. God will only restore after repentance and replacement have occurred. Be careful about replacement, the sin must be replaced with what is good and Godly.
Replace pride with humility, as in Job’s case.
