We have many rights as global citizens, just like we have rights as Canadian citizens. For example we have the right to a clean environment, good healthcare, to not be discriminated against, to the freedom of speech and many more. These rights also come with responsibilities, if we have the right to a clean environment, then we should also have the responsibility to keep it that way for other people. The same rules apply to all of our rights. In order to be a global citizen we must learn to think more about our actions and how they are affecting the rest of the world. Global citizenship is a reality, and has been achieved by numerous people. Take Elie Wiesel for example, he was one of many people who were imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps during the World War II, but he did not let this leave a bitter taste in his mouth. Instead of having a feeling of great resentment towards those people he took the imprisonment as an opportunity to show others how to be global citizens. By helping to defend people’s rights in places such as Africa, and the former Yugoslavia. He is a prime example of just what it means to become a global citizen. |
