"Get On Your Feet Boy Rip It Up"
Earlier this year I was at B's (my best guy friend) place. We decided to watch a movie and he said that I got the honour of picking. The choice was pretty limited but I found a movie I had never seen before. I looked at the cover and it looked like some sort of war movie and it was called "Full Metal Jacket." He came in the room and saw me looking at it and he started laughing. I turned to him and asked what was so funny and he told me that I was deffinitely not going to like that movie. I asked why and he said, "It's a guys movie." Im no raving feminist, but I fail to understand what sets the standard of a "guy's movie". Im sure there are some movies that are directed to male audiences and others to female audiences but I dont think this should completely exclude the other sex. So of course once he said it was a guy's movie, I wanted to prove to him that I could watch it so I told him this is what I wanted to watch. He started listing some other movies that he had and even said he was willing to watch a chick flick. I knew there was something about this movie so I walked up to him and handed it to him and said, "This one." He sighed and scratched the back of his neck and I asked him what was his problem, why couldnt  I watch it? He then said, "Its just a guys movie, its something that you watch with your buddies and drink beer and it would just be weird and ruin the movie if I watched it with a girl." Someone explain this logic to me! Do guys really bond over a movie with their friends? I finally agreed to watch something else and he was so relieved he let me choose "Pretty Woman" (he claimed it didnt belong to him, that his sister left it there...suuuure).

Of course just because he didnt want to watch it with me didnt mean I couldnt watch Full Metal Jacket with other people! What? I was intrigued! I wanted to know what the big fuss was about this movie. So just yesterday, I got my friends together (all girls, just to spite B) and I rented Full Metal Jacket.
*PLOT SPOILER*
From the very first scene we knew why it was a guys movie. The sergeant is delivering diss after diss to the "maggots"(privates). The movie is about the Vietnam war but its different than other movies. There were no love stories on the side or sentimental moments. In fact the only women in the whole movie were Vietnamese hookers and one sniper. The first half of the movie is the training of the characters. It was interesting to see how the military dehumanizes the privates and one of them snaps. He becomes obsessed with his gun and killing and ends up killing the drill sergeant and himself (really really graphic). Then the whole story line switches and the soldiers are in Vietnam. The whole movie is just killing, fighting, combat, hookers, revenge, bros before hoes and bonding with your boys.

So after watching the movie, which was quite good even from a female perspective, I understood why B didnt want to watch it with me. I could totally see guys bonding over that movie. I recognized quotes from the movie that the guys always say and it clicked. If I watched it with B, it would have ruined the bond that he had with his boys. I could picture them drinking beer and being completely engrossed in the sniper scene and joking around and being able to relate to the sexually deprived soldiers. It just made sense why watching it with me would change the mood of the movie. So next time a guy says, its a guys movie, I'll know the back off. Anyways there are girls movies too. I would never think of watching The Notebook with a guy, its just not right. Although I doubt B will be arguing with me to watch that one.

What I hear:

Tony Ray: Haha well the guys I hang out with are too "manly"(lame) to admit that they secretly enjoy chick flicks. I agree, The Notebook is amazing.

Eeerm: It really does depend on the movie though. There are some movies I love watching with a guy.

Frankly, I prefer watching gory, bloody, horror movies with my buds because most girls would be like "ewww", or "gross." Watching a movie with a girl isnt so bad (like my sister) as long as the movie isnt mushy and gushy. If it is, then lol i just leave the room, makeout scenes and more make me *gag* But I have to admit there are some ,chick flick or whatever, movies that are pretty good.

Yay, a band I know--but not the lyric/song:P.

I feel a bit awkward over this convo, but I think I can only protest to two aspects of chick type flicks. One, is the weepy/sappy and/or surreal drama. The other is sex scenes which most often are rather out of place and simply strange eye candy that people like my sister always put themselves into while ignoring the woman on screen. This special vision I cannot achieve and thus don't care for most love scenes in movies. I aim to correct this someday.

I have watched many movies most guys and some girls would not watch. I have watched most of the Disney collection. I have watched romantic comedies--some were quite disappointing in some minor way. I can sit through Pretty Woman and Notting Hill. I was curious about and heard alot of rave reviews about The Notebook. There are films I would find watching with other people in general unless I knew them differently or had a certain relationship. Other than that or the simple nuissances of talking and eating during a movie, I don't think there is much to keep two guys/girls or one of each from watching a film together. Interests may vary.

lol, I am a straight guy, and I love chick flicks. My all-time favorite guy bonding, war type movie is "Black Hawk Down". Also, Notebook is an awesome movie, lol

That's funny! I loved the first half of that movie, in fact, I've got a lot of it memorized and have been known to spout off some key lines at work from time to time.

I watched that movie for the first time the night before I headed off to Marine Boot Camp, eons ago!

(Not the best move)

November: Wow I havent heard this many guys confess to liking the Notebook. Most are still in the closet about that one.

Frankly: I hope your experience wasnt like theirs in the movie! Personally, I think they could have ended the movie after the first half. It was so good.
