Possibly because a 'compound' has connotations of being inescapable perhaps. Imprisonment, internment, jail, call if what you will.
A camp is a more temorary pastime.
A ranch is, well its quite gay really -unless of course you really are a rancher and not a wannabe.
Co-ops and communes etc are at least lately becoming more of an eco lifestlye thing. Tho 20 yrs ago a commune had a similar sort of ring to it as a compound. Easy to get into, hard to get out of.
My tip - Take a tent and make sure you've got friends who will come find you.
