| When You Say Nothing At All.....
|
|
|
Ever noticed when your watching the evening news...and you hear a story about bullying at a school...how so many people knew the bullying was going on..but noone helped the victim..? Noone spoke up to help stop the torture. How everyone turns their eye(and ear for that matter) to something else..as if to say"Not my problem".?
Ever notice how society welcomes this kind of behavior as the norm?
Ever been in a situation where someone says something you don't agree with, but you just don't want a confrontation? For whatever reason, you feel that it just is not worth it to speak up. Maybe you feel the group will turn on you, much like gradeschool bullying...you just don't want them to target you along with their original target.
I expect this is normal behavior for most people. We don't want to confront people on these issues unless they directly relate to us, and even then sometimes we just don't want to confront. We have a tendency to laugh it off and get away from the situation as quickly as possible.
I have found on this site that people do the same thing. Recently while browsing I have noticed that people laugh when other people are ridiculed(in the name of free speech and opinions). While we all quietly sit back behind our screens and type out our own miseries..we can find joy in laughing at others. While we all want comfort and compassion from others, we don't always offer it to everyone else. Oh, we have people we don't mind comforting, but there are some who we just don't mind laughing at. This habit.. I find hard to grasp.
I would remind you all..we are adults, not grade school children. While we are in all areas of the world, and of all walks of life, we all have the same needs, wants and desires. We all sleep under the same stars and breathe the same air. We are all equal, no matter who we are. We should all be afforded the same compassion and understanding.
I will not name names because I feel that people who are guilty of this know who they are. However, I would like to stand up here in cyberspace and let all of you know..I have lost respect for you..due to this. I will not be a party to cyber-bullying. I can not sit quietly by while other people ridicule innocent people because they can. And you can..after all, you are safe in your own little world typing on your keyboard. Noone really knows who you are..it is safe. You do however have a reputation at stake..It's okay though..do as you will. I am just one person, who cares what I think? At the risk of being cyber bashed by all you fine folks..I am saying no more. It is wrong to hurt people because you can.
Believe me words can hurt you, and I suspect you all know that. Just as words can comfort you, they can cut you like a knife. I think though that while words can hurt you..it's when you SAY NOTHING AT ALL..that hurts the most..!

I am with EASY, I hope it has not been me.
Many years ago, in "old NY", the New York of the 70's/early 80's there was a case of a woman that was beaten to death and raped in a populated neighborhood. People heard her screams for help and did nothing.
The shock over that incident, people hearing someone in trouble and doing nothing, is what alot of people say was a big turning point in NY.
NY will never be Oz(as in the Wizard) but it has become better and many say that reaction to this horror is a big part as to why people changed.
I hope we do not need something that bad to happen here for some to change.
And shemelts:Look at all the love that was poured out yesterday in response to the question of the day and see that we have lots of good here
