This weekend was a difficult one for me. My mother made the decision to stop all medical treatments including dialysis and insulin therapy. She will take no more medicines to sustain her life and will slowly slip into a coma and pass away in her sleep. She is tired and just wants to go on to heaven where she will be reunited with her mother, whom she adored. To say that this is difficult to fathom is an understatement. Having been a witness to her suffering for the past 3 years, I will be supportive of her choice.
Yesterday, I made the difficult phone calls to all my siblings(7) to let them all know she had made this decision. These phone calls were surreal and met with varying degrees of disbelief and denial. Two of my siblings immediately arrived at the hospital to ascertain the situation for themselves. Before their arrival I had expressed to my mother the need for her to individually tell her children of her wishes and allow each of them to say their goodbyes to her.
There were many tears shed yesterday with these siblings and my mother and it was indeed a difficult time for all of us. I am sure that the days to follow will be equally difficult and I am praying that I have the strenth to endure. The hardest part of all is that she has her full mental faculties about her, her body is just worn out.
I would ask that you all keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I face the days ahead.
Thank you,
peace :) shemelts

Shemelts....what a difficult and heartbreaking thing to go thru. I also went thru the samething with my Mom a year and a half ago. I so wish I had something to tell you that will make everything better and not so hard to go thru this. My prayers are with you and your family during this time! I really am so glad that I was able to have my Mom home with my husband, two girls and I when my Mom got to that point of stopping all insulin, meds and food. She went so peacefully and we were all able to be there to see her off to Heaven. Know that you aren't alone in all that you're feeling and going thru and I'll be keeping you in my thoughts! If you need to vent....I'm here....
