So you all know that I have been married forever and a day(25 years on June 11). My husband has been recovering from a recent hernia surgery. While he has been off from work he has painted my son's bedroom, cleaned the yard and run errand after errand. He is bored stiff and so Wed. he decided enough was enough and he would make a trip to Watts Bar Lake. I supported this decision because I don't want him moping around the house 24/7. He was gone for several hours..OH JOY!!! :)
He has this hobby that he loves called metal detecting/treasure hunting. He enjoys going to the lake and wading out in water with his detector to hunt jewelry and money or whatever might be out there. When you see him out there up to his ears in the water, with head phones on ..he looks plumb silly. He enjoys it and it gets him out of the house for awhile..so I think it is pretty cool, even if he does look like a dufuss..ha! In fact, this hobby has been a lucrative one. Not only has he found diamond rings for me, he has cashed in a lot of gold for money...yes folks..real money..woot!
So, Wednesday he heads out and is gone several hours. When he returns he hands me a ring..a classring..Lost by some innocent soul who chose to swim in the lake over Memorial Day weekend probably. He asks me to locate the person it belongs to..or at least try to..so we can return the ring to it's rightful owner.
The internet is a wonderful thing..yes it is! I googled the county that was listed on the ring. Several states showed up with this county. Since we live in Tennessee I shortened the search down to our state. I found the county Director of Schools and made a quick call. After giving the girl's full name(thank God they had the forethought to include her full name inside the ring), I was told they would check and call me back. Within 10 minutes I received a call from the same lady and she informed me that yes indeed they had a child with that name in their school system. In fact, they had left a message with her mother to give me a call about the ring.
Within minutes I received a call from a tearful mother. In disbelief she told me the story of losing the ring over Memorial Day while visiting her brother. Seems the ring had been purchased for her daughter as a gift from her grandparents to commemorate her eighth and final year in grade school. Her grandfather was dying of cancer and this would likely be his last gift to her. She was ever so thankful and it was a humbling experience to think that such a small gesture could make such a big difference to a total stranger. We arranged to meet and restore the ring back to her this weekend at the lake where she lost it and we hung up.
My husband has returned several class rings to various states. We search these people out because we know that losing a piece of your personal memorabilia is like losing a little chunk of yourself. It feels good to be able to replace that little chunk for people.
Lessons learned...When possible put your full name inside your rings..it helps to find you should you lose them. Don't wear any jewelry while swimming..and most importantly...No kind deed, no matter how small, goes unrewarded..
peace :) shemelts
