 The Butterfly Theory.....
I always thought the butterfly theory was just plain stupid, and unrealistic. What is the butterfly theory, you ask. It is this one:

If you love something set it free, if it comes back to you, it is yours. If it doesn't, it never was!

Hmmm, now how does that make any sense at all? If you've been in a relationship and had hard times, hard enough to want to leave, you surely do not want to come back. If you love someone deeply, you can't let them go, even if you know they will come back, as things will never be the same. So this theory, while it sounds sweet, is just not realistic.

I've been married a very long time, longer than some of you have been alive. All of the times I wanted to throw open the doors and run to the hills, the thought of coming back never entered my mind. What kept me here, well many things actually. One of which was the notion that perhaps I would not be happier out in the big wide world alone and what is happy by the way?

Though I always knew I would not be alone for long, I did always wonder if the person I picked up my life and moved on with, would be worse than the one I left. My mom and I had a theory that everyone had their flaws and since we were familiar with our husbands flaws, why leave and get someone with worse ones (though my dad had the fatal flaw of alcoholism, nothing could be worse). We imagined that jumping from the frying pan into the fire, would not be that great, so we stayed put. Not sure if that was the right answer either.

The notion that one day I would look R.J. in the eyes and say, you can go..find yourself, and when you do, come back to me, is a ludicrous one. I am much more likely to say..Don't let the screen door hit you on your way out. I know full well that in finding himself, he is liable to pick up some germs that won't wash out with bleach, and if he leaves...I will not let him come back. Not to fear folks, I couldn't force this man to leave, even if I had a red hot pitch fork. Likely as not should we ever part, I'd be the one to go. It wouldn't be a kiss at the door on my way out either, I'd have to sneak out the door the minute he left for work and put a good eight hours between us before he found out.

Now never fear, our relationship is intact. What brought this on? The song by David Cook..Come Back to me, which I have included here. Oh and by the way, the crazy girl that left this man, she doesnt deserve to come back. I'd drink his bath water. Okay, that was a joke, but I would run his bath water, and bathe him and ..um yeah.  I'll hush and let you listen to the song. Enjoy!!

You say you got to go and find yourself
You say that you've become someone else
Don't recognize the face in the mirror looking back at you

You say you're leaving as you look away
I know there's really nothing left to say
Just know I'm here whenever you need me, I'll wait for you

So I'll let you go I'll set you free
And when you see what you need to see
When you find you
Come back to me

Take your time I won't go anywhere
Picture you with the wind in your hair
I keep your things right where you left them I'll be here for you

And I'll let you go I'll set you free
And when you see what you need to see
When you find you
Come back to me

I hope you find everything that you need
I'll be right here waiting to see
When you find you
Come back to me

I can't get close if you're not there
I can't get inside if there's no soul to bare
I can't fix you, I can't save you
It's something you have to do

So I'll let you go I'll set you free
And when you see what you need to see
When you find you
Come back to me

Come back to me

So I'll let you go I'll set you free
And when you see what you need to see
When you find you
Come back to me

I hope you find everything that you need
I'll be right here waiting to see
When you find you
Come back to me

Now woooo  now woooo
When you find you come back to me
Now wooo  now wooo
when you find you come back to me

When you find you
Come back to me

Peace and Love and all that Jazz!!  :)  shemelts

Great post! Heart and soul. I have always kind of felt the same way about that
saying. Mystified mostly.

'he is liable to pick up some germs that won't wash out with bleach', = LOL!

'I'd drink his bath water'. That is a new one to me - that is some devotion! Love it.

It's not that you have to.. you have to be willing to if that is the greatest love.. otherwise you become obsessive. but when love is real and right you never have to..

"If you love someone, set them free.
If they don't come back, hunt them down and kill them"
Thats how I heard it.

Excellent post and all the comments are spot on. I think the same about your theory. And I love David Cook. I liked him big, big on American Idol, but I was pulling for Archuletta that year, lol.
I refuse to let anyone I love go. If you walk away, walk for good and don't expect to come back..is how I see it, but that's me. :) But then again..depends on the circumstances of departure.

Dani..I don't watch American Idol, but I do love some of the stars who got their start there. I suppose I don't have enough experience with the departure thingy, been married all my life.

My butterfly. A theory. The wings move in Harlem and the air stirs in New York City. And I am startled by a cold. And then the CHILL. And I reflect. What if... the door wasn't there. Could it be left open. Would the air still touch me?

And what about love? Does it touch me, or do I touch it? Questions and answers, and what does it have to do with butterfly in Harlem and Love in me. Everything. My theory.

Stoney..very nice theory indeed. Thank you for dropping in. :)

There is another theory: "If you love someone, let him free. If he comes back to you, he's yours. If not, find him and kill an asshole."

As far as I know, a lot of women decide to put up with their men's flaws because they already know every single one of them and got used to them somehow. And when finding a new man, you'll have to start it all over again. And who can guarantee that the new man will be with not even bigger flaws...
So this approach is completely practical.

Anyway, I agree that the 'butterfly theory' doesn't work at all. You can't let someone you love go, as well as you won't take him back if he would.
